
Timely Hitting Leads to Bums Win over Southern Illinois

TRAVERSE CITY, MI- The Traverse City Beach Bums(22-25) and the Southern Illinois Miners(24-20), for the third straight night, locked up for another pitcher's duel with the Beach Bums getting the clutch hits, pulling away for a 5-1 victory.
After two scoreless innings, Kendall Patrick was able to reach second on an error with one out. Connor Oliver moved him to third on a grounder then came in to score on an Isaac Benard RBI single, giving the Bums a 1-0 lead. In the sixth, Oliver led off by getting hit by a pitch then moved to second on Benard's sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Luke Lowery powered a double into right field to score Oliver, double the Traverse City advantage.
The Miners responded in the seventh when Kyle Davis knocked home a run with a single to left, but the Beach Bums pulled away in the eighth with three runs on four straight hits. Benard led off with a single then scored on Kengor's league-leading 21st double of the season. Lowery then singled to moved Kengor to third. Alexis Rivera came to the plate and yanked a double down the right field line, scoring both Kengor and Lowery for a 5-1 lead.
Matt Murphy earned the win for the Bums to improve to 2-2 on the year. He went six innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out five. Steven Riding is dealt a tough loss as he went six innings, giving up three hits, one earned run, and he struck out 11. He falls to 4-3. Matt Williams pitched the last two innings, striking out four, for his fifth save. With the win, the Beach Bums take two of three from Southern Illinois, and win their second straight series.
On Friday, the Beach Bums continue this week's six game home stand, with a series opener against the Gateway Grizzlies. Max McNabb gets the start for Gateway while Justin Finan goes for the Beach Bums.
