TIMBERS WEEKLY UPDATE: July 5, 2018

Timbers to play host to the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park on Saturday

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers will return to Providence Park this weekend when the team plays host to the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, July 7. Beginning at 8 p.m. (Pacific), Saturday's match will be broadcast live on ROOT SPORTS with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM/102.9 FM The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).

Recent form

Heading into Saturday's match, the Timbers (7-3-5, 26pts) are riding a 12-game unbeaten streak (9-0-3) across all competitions since April 14, most recently taking a 3-2 win over Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC at CenturyLink Field on June 30. Scoring for a second straight week, defender Larrys Mabiala became the first Timbers defender to record a brace in a regular-season match in the 3-2 win, while forward Samuel Armenteros also scored his fourth goal of the season and midfielder Diego Valeri recorded three assists, becoming the first Timbers player to tally three assists in an away match. During Portland's 12-game stretch, 10 of those matches without a loss have occurred during league play, ranking as the longest active unbeaten run in MLS and tied for the longest this season.

Home form

Despite playing their first five games of the 2018 campaign away from home, the Timbers still maintain one of the strongest home records since the start of the 2016 campaign, During that stretch, Portland has recorded 27 wins (27-5-8) at home, which ranks tied as the second-most in the league, despite playing fewer games than MLS teams ranked in the top five for home wins during that span.

Facing San Jose

In 10 regular-season games played between the two clubs at Providence Park, the Timbers have produced an unbeaten record against the Earthquakes, tallying seven wins and three draws since 2011. Portland's seven wins are tied for the most home wins by the Timbers against a single MLS opponent. Saturday's match marks the third overall meeting between both clubs, with the Timbers taking a 1-0 win over the Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium in regular-season play on May 5, before producing a strong 2-0 win in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Providence Park on June 6.

Scouting San Jose

Entering Saturday's match, the Earthquakes (2-9-6, 12pts) have drawn their last three matches, tying the New England Revolution 2-2, Real Salt Lake 1-1 and most recently the LA Galaxy 3-3 on June 30. While playing away from home, San Jose has produced a 1-5-3 record in nine matches away from Avaya Stadium. Forward Danny Hoesen leads the team in goals scored (10), while midfielder Vako has the most assists (4).

Next match

Following Saturday's game, the Timbers will travel to face Los Angeles FC at Banc of California Stadium on Sunday, July 15. Beginning at 3 p.m. (Pacific), the July 15 match will be televised nationally on ESPN with local radio broadcasts on 750 AM/102.9 FM The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
