PORTLAND, Ore. - U.S. Soccer today announced the possible pairings for the third round of the 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Portland Timbers will play host to the winner of the second-round matchup between the Wilmington Hammerheads (USL PRO) and Austin Aztex (Premier Development League) in the third round of the tournament on Wednesday, May 29, at JELD-WEN Field at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).
The U.S. Open Cup match on May 29 is included as part of Timbers full-season ticket packages as Exhibition B. Single-game tickets, starting at $15, go on sale to the public starting Thursday at 10 a.m. (Pacific) through the JELD-WEN Field box office and online at www.portlandtimbers.com.
The Hammerheads and Aztex meet in the second round on Tuesday, May 21, in Austin, Texas at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific).
All 16 United States-based clubs from Major League Soccer, including the Timbers, enter the 2013 U.S. Open Cup - the 100th edition of the tournament - in the third round and will face the 16 remaining teams from the first two rounds of the tournament.
The Timbers development team, the Timbers U-23s, play host to the Charleston Battery of USL PRO in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 21, at JELD-WEN Field at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific). The winner of that match will advance to face the San Jose Earthquakes in the third round on Tuesday, May 28.
The Timbers U-23s defeated the Sacramento Gold of the National Premier Soccer League 3-2 in the first round on Tuesday. Tickets for their second-round match against the Battery are $10 and are available for purchase at the JELD-WEN Field box office and online at www.portlandtimbers.com.
The 2013 U.S. Open Cup features 68 teams, marking the largest field in the modern era (1995-present). The tournament includes clubs, both professional and amateur, from across the U.S. soccer landscape; all Division I, II and III clubs affiliated with U.S. Soccer will participate in the tournament proper.
The U.S. Open Cup, a single-elimination tournament, has crowned a champion for 99 consecutive years beginning in 1914. The winning team's name is engraved on the base of the Dewar Challenge Trophy.
