Timbers Fall 3-1 to FC Dallas

PORTLAND, Ore. - Playing the first of two home matches this week, the Portland Timbers fell 3-1 to FC Dallas before a sold-out crowd of 21,144 fans at Providence Park on Wednesday night.

In their first loss at home to FC Dallas in seven regular-season games played since 2011 (4-1-2), the Timbers, who entered the match leading the league in chances created (65), produced 13 overall shots in the game, but FC Dallas took the lead in the third minute and recorded three goals in the first half to build a 3-0 lead.

Portland's goal was recorded by forward Darren Mattocks, who notched his first finish for the Timbers in the 67th minute of play.

Next up, the Timbers will face the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park on Saturday, April 16; kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).

FC Dallas (4-1-2, 14pts) opened the scoring in the third minute of play when a turnover in the midfield resulted in a quick counter-attacking play for the visitors. Forward Tesho Akindele, who collected the ball on the edge of the area, released midfielder Michael Barrios in behind for a finish from inside the 18-yard box.

With the Timbers looking to equalize, forward Fanendo Adi produced an effort that narrowly missed the frame in the eighth minute of play, back-heeling Alvas Powell's cross from close range, while midfielder Diego Valeri spun past his defender and fired a powerful strike from inside the box that went just high of the target four minutes later.

But, midfielder Fabian Castillo doubled Dallas' lead in the 26th minute of play, lobbing the ball into the back of the net after another turnover by the Timbers deep in their own half. Three minutes later, FC Dallas scored a third goal when Akindele collected a loose ball in the box and fired it into the back of the net.

The Timbers cut into Dallas' lead when Mattocks scored his first goal of the season within one minute of entering the game, reacting quickly to pounce on a loose ball in the box before hitting a strong shot past FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz.

Remaining aggressive in the second half, Portland created seven of its 13 shots in the final 45. In the 65th minute, midfielder Lucas Melano ran on to Valeri's weighted pass into the box before firing a driven cross that just missed forward Jack McInerney, who was charging into the six-yard box. With nine minutes remaining in the game, Portland created another opportunity when Valeri's curling free kick found McInerney, who had his header cleared off the line by the Dallas defense.

Saturday's match against San Jose will be broadcast live on ROOT SPORTS with local radio broadcast on 750 AM/102.9 FM The Game (English) and La GranD 1150 AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).

Notes:

- Forward Darren Mattocks recorded his first goal since joining the Timbers on March 14.

- Mattocks' finish marked his 20th goal in MLS play, moving him into a tie with Deshorn Brown for the sixth-most goals scored by a Jamaican-born player in MLS history.

- Chris Klute made a career-high nine tackles during Wednesday's match - the most by a Timbers player this season and the fourth-most by any MLS player in 2016.

- Diego Valeri led Portland with five shots in Wednesday's match, marking the 16th game in which he has taken five or more shots since joining Portland in 2013.

- The Timbers have scored seven second-half goals this season, which is the second-most in MLS, trailing only the LA Galaxy (8).

- Portland is one of five MLS teams to record a goal in each game so far this season.
