FC Dallas Wins, 3-1, in Portland against Defending MLS Cup Champion, Timbers FC

FRISCO, Texas - FC Dallas (4-1-2, 14 points) netted three first-half goals to take three points in Portland for the first time in club history and move into first place in the MLS standings tonight at Providence Park.

FC Dallas just missed out on a goal in the second minute. Victor Ulloa, who came into the starting lineup for Kellyn Acosta, lofted a free kick into the area from 30 yards out. The Wylie, Texas, native followed his serve and was rewarded when the ball ended up at his feet inside the area. Ulloa cut left, around a Timbers FC defender and fired a shot over the goalkeeper's right shoulder, but the attempt rose just over the crossbar.

Two minutes later, Michael Barrios scored his third road goal of the season in the fourth minute of the match. Former Timbers FC forward Maxi Urruti pried the ball free from a Portland defender in his own third of the pitch. Urruti quickly worked the ball to forward partner Tesho Akindele, who ran at what remained of the Timbers' back line. After drawing two defenders, Akindele slipped a pass inside to Barrios, who used two touches to beat goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey, low to the back post.

Urruti, once again, picked the pocket of a Portland defender on their side of the field in the 26th minute. This time the victim was Timbers FC captain Jack Jewsbury. The turnover instantly put Fabian Castillo in alone against Kwarasey. The winger sped into the area before lifting a cheeky chip shot over the goalkeeper's head to make it 2-0 Dallas.

Three minutes later Akindele made it four straight matches with either a goal or an assist when he hammered home a shot from 15 yards out in the 29th minute. The play began with Maynor Figueroa sending in a cross from the left flank. Kwarasey got a hand on the pass, sending it out as far as the top of the box, where a mishit from Castillo ended up at the feet of Akindele. The Canadian international pounded the ball on net, through the legs of Kwarasey and off a Timbers FC defender before the ball slowly rolled over the goal line to give Dallas a 3-0 lead at the half hour mark.

FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz made an outstanding diving save to his right side to preserve the three-goal lead in the 39th minute. After sustained pressure from Portland, the home side worked the ball out wide for Ned Grabavoy. The No. 10 cracked a hard shot on the wet turf just inside the near post, but Seitz was on his game, slapping the ball past the post and over the end line for a corner kick.

Portland pulled a goal back to make it 3-1 in the 67th minute. The play began with a shot from outside the area, which was blocked by an FC Dallas defender. The loose ball sat perfectly for Darren Mattocks, who had just entered the match in the 65th minute. The former Vancouver Whitecap hit a rising shot that beat Seitz high over his left shoulder.

That was as far as the FC Dallas defense would bend, closing out the match with a 60-40 advantage in possession.

On getting a win at Providence Park...

This place is difficult. It has been a challenge for us. We play against a very good team but we have a group of players today that came out very sharp, especially in the first 45 minutes, when we created a lot of options to score. They accomplished the game plan so we're very happy. In the second half, obviously Portland's reaction complicated things. We had a chance to score probably two goals more before Portland's goal. I have to the credit to these guys that held on to the result. They deserve the points that we take home tonight. Very, very well deserved.

On if the 5-0 loss against Houston was a wakeup call for the team that's won its last five games...

It always creates urgency, one way or another, when you lose that way. The good part is we reacted well. We have been getting good results. We have been playing well. The league is tough. It's difficult. It's complex and it's long. It just gave us another experience. It's a long journey.

On if tonight's win is a statement performance...

Yes. We have had three games away this year. We went to Houston and obviously had a bad experience but also we went to D.C. United, a difficult place to play against a very good team, also and we beat them 3-0. Tonight's performance just shows that it was not a coincidence but we have to keep building on that part. We're far from being what we want. It's a team that always wants more. We take the experiences out of every game but today we're pleased. We'll take three points out of a toough place again.

On the win...

It's huge. You know, in our minds we came here and obviously we're going to go for the three points. We had two results at home that didn't necessarily go the way we wanted them to go. We were hungry. We knew we need to make up for it here. Obviously, you see the start that we had and the pressure we put on them early and it obviously paid dividends.

On the team confidence after tonight's win...

It's great. Obviously we've won our last two road games and we want to be road warriors. In this league, you have to get points on the road in order to be at the top, where we want to be. For us this is our third opportunity on the road. We responded really well to it. We'll try to replicate this going forward.

On the atmosphere at Providence Park...

It's always very loud and passionate and who doesn't want to pay in that atmosphere? For us, we love it. I think it kind of raised our games a little bit tonight. We knew we had a tough task ahead of us and we knew that we needed to really put on a perfect game to come out of here with points. The guys put a hell of a first half together and the second half, I think we showed our maturity a little bit and what we learned last year in the playoffs. We really showed it the second half.

On how having former Portland forward Maximilliano Urruti helped the team...

We knew how much this game meant to him. He left here on top and he came to us and he's hungry. You can see the work ethic he has. He put an unbelievable amount of pressure on their back four tonight. I think he got the touch on Jewsbury to put [Fabian Castillo] through. That's huge for us. He's been doing that all year and that's been working well for us. We knew this game meant a lot to him and you could see how he played on the field.
