Timbers Fall 2-1 to Montreal Impact on the Road

MONTREAL - Playing their third game in eight days, the Portland Timbers received a second-half goal from Tomás Conechny, but fell 2-1 on the road against the Montreal Impact in a midweek match before 15,167 fans at Stade Saputo on Wednesday night. For Conechny it was his first career MLS goal in his second career MLS start, while Julio Cascante and Marvin Loría both recorded their first assists of the 2019 season.

Youth factor

The average age of the Timbers starting lineup for the match against Montreal was 24 years old. Portland's starting XI on Wednesday featured five players (Conechny, Cristhian Paredes, Eryk Williamson, Marco Farfan, Loría) age 22 years or younger.

Timbers' firsts

Conechny recorded his first career MLS goal in his second career start, while making his 12th career league appearance in the match. It marked the second consecutive game a Timbers player recorded their first career MLS goal, as Loría tallied his first MLS goal for the Timbers in their 4-0 win over the Houston Dynamo on June 22. Loría also recorded his first career MLS assist in the match against Montreal, while Cascante notched his first assist of the 2019 season. Additionally, Modou Jadama and Williamson each earned their first career MLS starts in the match.

Key plays

Montreal opened the scoring in the 28th minute of the match. Against the run of play, the Impact won the ball near the midfield line and Bacary Sagna played a quick pass in behind the Timbers backline into space for Orji Okwonkwo, who dribbled into the box and fired a shot high into the top corner of the goal.

The Timbers leveled the match in the 53rd minute on a set piece. Loría delivered a free kick from the far right wing to Cascante near the back post. Cascante won the ball and headed it to Conechny, who converted with a header from close range for his first career MLS goal.

Portland nearly took the lead in the 57th minute on a quick counter-attack. Dairon Asprilla led the break for the Timbers down the right flank, delivering a cross to Conechny inside the box. Conechny slotted a quick pass to Williamson near the penalty spot, but his shot attempt was blocked.

The Impact reclaimed the lead at 2-1 in the 66th minute. Saphir Taider attempted to settle a looping cross that was played from the right side to the left side of the box. Taider redirected the cross to Okwonkwo, who spun and sent a volley into the top right corner of the goal.

Notes:

The average age of the Timbers starting lineup in the match was 24 years old. The starting XI for Portland featured five players age 22 or younger.

Modou Jadama and Eryk Williamson earned their first career MLS starts in the match.

Tomas Conechny scored his first career MLS goal in his second career start with the Timbers. With the goal, it marked the second straight week a Portland player scored their first career MLS goal after Marvin Loria netted his first goal in league play against Houston on June 22.

Conechny is the 10th player to score a goal for Portland in MLS this season.

Julio Cascante and Loria recorded their first assists of the MLS season. The assist was the first of Loria's MLS career.

With assists from Cascante and Loria, a total of 10 players have recorded at least one assist for Portland in MLS play in 2019.

Marco Farfan made his first appearance in an MLS match in 2019, starting and playing 90 minutes.

Foster Langsdorf made his second career MLS appearance in the match as a second-half substitute.

With the season debuts of two players in Wednesday's game, a total of 26 have featured for the Timbers in league play this season.
