Timbers Fall 1-0 to Sporting Kansas City

PORTLAND, Ore. - Resuming Major League Soccer regular-season play following a two-week break for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the Portland Timbers dominated possession and absorbed a season-high 23 fouls, but could not overcome an early deficit in a 1-0 loss against Sporting Kansas City in front of sold-out crowd of 20,814 at Providence Park on Friday night.

Controlling nearly 67 percent of possession in the match, the Timbers (4-5-8, 20pts) conceded a goal off a long throw-in from defender Seth Sinovic that found defender Kevin Ellis in the penalty box. Ellis was able to touch the ball to midfielder Lawrence Olum on the left side of the box, and Olum's hard, low drive provided Sporting Kansas City (7-5-4, 25pts) with a 1-0 lead inside the opening 25 minutes.

Prior to Olum's goal, Timbers forward Fanendo Adi appeared to put Portland into the lead early in the match, connecting on a well-placed cross from midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe for a goal that was disallowed as the referee judged Adi to be in an offside position.

The Timbers suffered 23 fouls in the match, which ranks as the second-most fouls sustained by Portland in a Timbers MLS game, while also earning 72 percent of the possession in the second half. Outshooting Sporting Kansas City, 11-9, Portland's defense held the visitors to just three shots in the second half.
