Heaps not interested in excuses after loss to Philly

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Hefty advantages in possession, attempted shots and shots on target didn't translate to the scoreboard on Saturday night as the New England Revolution returned from the 2014 FIFA World Cup break in disappointing fashion, suffering a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Union.

From the perspective of Revolution head coach Jay Heaps, his side's performance simply wasn't good enough, and in his postgame remarks he had no interest in hearing any excuses about the evening's result.

"You can say it's an off night, you can say it wasn't our night," Heaps said. "But that's the easy way out."

Instead, Heaps said the Revs will take time to evaluate all aspects of the loss - from the players on the field to the coaching staff - before beginning a hectic July schedule which features seven games.

Perhaps Saturday's match would've unfolded differently had the Revs converted one of their early opportunities, but Teal Bunbury, Diego Fagundez and Patrick Mullins all saw chances go begging inside 15 minutes.

The Revs were then left to rue their profligacy in front of goal as Philadelphia soon gained a foothold, grabbing a halftime lead when Sebastien Le Toux pounced on an errant back-pass from Jose Goncalves.

"I thought we should've taken our chances in the first 15 minutes," Heaps said. "Then I thought we were second-best, quite frankly. So the bad goal was kind of the final straw of that first half. I don't think we were good enough all the way through, so that goal really hurt us."

A strong start to the second half offered hope that the Revs could find a way back, but Danny Cruz pierced the hosts with a dagger when he doubled the Union's lead in the 69th minute. Substitute Saer Sene scored shortly thereafter to once again pull the Revs within a goal, but Le Toux's second ultimately put the game out of reach.

Now the Revs have a short week to analyze their performance and make the necessary adjustments ahead of an important trip to Real Salt Lake and an Independence Day showdown with last year's MLS Cup runner-up.

"It's just not good enough all around," said Chris Tierney. "As individuals and as a team we're going to take a long look at this one and try to be better for Salt Lake."
