Timbers Earn 2-1 Victory on the Road against St. Louis City SC

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Portland Timbers earned their first road win of the 2023 campaign with a 2-1 victory against top-of-the-table opponent St. Louis CITY SC at CITYPARK on Saturday night. Evander opened the scoring in the first half with a penalty-kick goal for Portland, while Yimmi Chara tallied the game-winning goal to help the Timbers secure three points.

Goal Scorers and Playmakers

Evander scored his second goal of the 2023 campaign. He joins Dairon Asprilla and Juan David Mosquera for a team-best two goals each. Y. Chara made his first appearance for the Timbers since their season opener on Feb. 27 as a second-half substitute and registered his first goal of the season. In 59 minutes played this season, Y. Chara has tallied a goal and an assist. Moreno tallied his team-leading third assist of the 2023 campaign.

Notable Numbers

Earning their first win on the road of the campaign, the Timbers served St. Louis its second loss at home and third loss overall in the 2023 season. Seven of Portland's goals this season have come in the final 15 minutes of matches - more than any other team in MLS. Additionally, the Timbers have received six goals via substitutes this season, which is also the most of any team in MLS. With Y. Chara becoming the Timbers 10th goal scorer of the campaign, Portland is tied with Columbus Crew SC for the most goal scorers on a team thus far in the season. The Timbers have not repeated a single lineup this season and in 15 consecutive MLS matches, dating back to 2022. Portland has seen 24 different players earn a start this season - more than any other team in the league.

Goal-Scoring Plays

POR - Evander (penalty kick), 63rd minute: Portland won a penalty kick after St. Louis conceded a hand ball in the box. Evander stepped up to the spot and converted the attempt into the lower right corner.

STL - Célio Pompeu (Tomás Ostrák, Rasmus Alm), 79th minute: Tomás Ostrák dribbled down the right side toward the endline and cut a cross to the corner of the six-yard box. Célio Pompeu fired a one-time shot into the upper netting of the goal.

POR - Yimmi Chara (Santiago Moreno), 82nd minute: Moreno dribbled toward the top of the 18-yard box and slipped a pass into the path of Y. Chara, who finished with a first-time shot inside of the far post.
