Timbers Announce Roster Status Ahead of 2017 Season

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers today announced that the team has exercised the 2017 contract options on defender Zarek Valentin and midfielder Ben Zemanski, and has not exercised the 2017 contract options on Nick Besler, Neco Brett, Wade Hamilton, Chris Klute, Chris Konopka, Ben Polk, Jermaine Taylor and Andy Thoma. The Timbers also did not exercise the 2017 contract option for Jack Barmby, but the club has extended a bona fide offer for the upcoming season.
Players already under contract for the 2017 season include: Fanendo Adi, Gbenga Arokoyo, Diego Chara, Marco Farfan, Jake Gleeson, Jack McInerney, Darren Mattocks, Lucas Melano, Darlington Nagbe, Alvas Powell, Liam Ridgewell, Steven Taylor, Diego Valeri and Vytas.
Nat Borchers, Amobi Okugo and Taylor Peay are out of contract with the Timbers. The club remains in discussion with Okugo and has extended a bona fide offer to Peay, while Borchers is eligible for MLS free agency, which begins at the conclusion of the MLS Expansion Draft on Tuesday. Dairon Asprilla is under contract with the Timbers for the 2017 season and remains on loan with Colombian club Millonarios F.C.
Midfielders Ned Grabavoy and Jack Jewsbury retired at the conclusion of the 2016 season.
Additionally, the Timbers have acquired a 2017 international slot (through Dec. 31, 2017) and the rights to forward Kennedy Igboananike from D.C. United in exchange for the 21st pick in the second round of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. Igboananike's option for the 2017 MLS season was declined.
