Tillo Dazzles as Rocks Win
July 25, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - Daniel Tillo tossed seven scoreless innings to lead the Wilmington Blue Rocks to a 5-0 victory over the Potomac Nationals on Thursday at Frawley Stadium. The Rocks took two of three in the series thanks to their 11th shutout victory of the season.
Tillo worked around some early traffic on the basepaths. His defense threw out a runner at third base in the first inning and turned a double play in the second. The lefty settled in however, allowing just one man to reach third all evening and retiring eight of the final nine batters he faced. He finished his start with five strikeouts and only one walk. It was Tillo's sixth quality outing in his last eight starts.
On offense the Blue Crew bookended their evening with production. Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the first courtesy of Dennicher Carrasco's sacrifice fly. That would be the only score Potomac starter Kyle Johnston would allow over seven innings of work.
The P-Nats bullpen did not fare nearly as well, yielding four runs in the eighth inning. Kyle Isbel came through with the night's biggest hit when he launched a bases-loaded triple to the right-field corner. Carrasco capped the scoring with an RBI-single that plated Isbel.
The Rocks hit the road to open a three-game series with the Down East Wood Ducks on Friday at 7 p.m. Fans can catch all of the action with the Voice of the Blue Rocks, Cory Nidoh, on 89.7 WGLS-FM.
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:
Wilmington has operated as a quality over quantity offensive attack all season long. The CL North First Half champs won despite getting out-hit 7-6 on Thursday. It marked the 28th time in 2019 the Rocks have won despite managing fewer knocks than their vanquished foe.
The Blue Crew pitching staff has enjoyed a remarkably consistent season. The Rocks held an opponent without a run on Thursday for the 11th time this season. To put that figure into perspective, Wilmington posted just seven shutouts in the entire 2018 season. As a unit the Rocks rank second in the Carolina League with a 3.06 ERA. The only staff with a better earned run average and more shutouts this year is Wilmington's next opponent, the Down East Wood Ducks.
For the first time in seven tries the Rocks won a rubber match. Wilmington had dropped six in a row, including three this month, before Thursday's series-clinching triumph over Potomac. Overall the Rocks have won 16 series, lost eight and split six in 2019.
