Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB -- The Medicine Hat Tigers were looking to climb back in a playoff race when they faced off against the Swift Current Broncos Saturday night, their only game of the weekend. The Tigers and Broncos were tied in the standings prior to pukc drop but a lone goal from Steven Owre couldn't propel the Tabbies to their first win in 8 games.
The opening frame was a tight checking game as only 16 shots were fired on goaltenders Nick Schenider and Travis Child. Child was making his first start against the Tabbies this season while the game marked the second time Schneider faced the Broncos. Dylan MacPherson drew into the Tigers lineup as a call-up due to a few players continuing to battle the flu bug heading around Medicine Hat. Clayton Kirichenko would get into a late fight with rookie Tyler Adams as they squared off, both were spirited combatants, but Tiger fans must've cringed when they saw the mitts fly as Kirichenko was coming off of a long term upper body injury. The game remained scoreless through the opening 20 minutes.
The game remained scoreless untilt he later half of the second period as the Broncos would open the scoring on the power play. With one second over a minute to play Tyler Steenbergen buried his 11th of the year to give the home side the lead. Medicine Hat would drop 16 shots on Child in the frame but couldn't solve the netminder. Jon Martin would add another moments before the buzzer would sound as the momentum shifted towards the home side heading into the break. Also in the period a scrap between Nick Heid and Austin Adamson occurred as a small rivalry seemed to be on the verge, especially when the two clubs play 3 times this month.
The final period had the Tigers break the goose egg on the scoreboard. A red hot Steven Owre potted his 15th of the season as the unassisted goal proved to be a game changer. Medicine Hat carried the play in the moments following the goal, but it was soon cut short just moments later as Lane Pederson, who had 9 points against the Tabbies this season, buried for his 15th of the year restoring the 2 goal lead for the Broncos. Another late period goal would all but seal the game for the Broncos as Medicine Hat dropped this one 4-1.
