Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - The Tigers had a Valentine's Day dance with the Silvertips in Co-op Place for their lone matchup this season. Medicine Hat prevailed in their three previous matchups with Everett.
Love may have been in the air for Valentine's Day but the tone on the ice was all business. The Tigers were looking to take down the red-hot Silvertips who were on a 12 game winning streak and sitting atop the entire WHL.
The Tips were on the board early to start the game with Landon DuPont's 15th goal of the season at 2:41.
Everett doubled their lead just after the halfway point of the first period with Carter Bear's 26th of the season at 10:58.
With the Tigers down by a pair, they needed some momentum to get on the scoreboard and start the comeback. The spark that started the fire came on a shorthanded 2-on-0 opportunity with Markus Ruck and Jonas Woo on the offensive. Ruck sent a pass to Woo who had a break, and Woo slid the puck through Miller's five-hole for his 26th tally of the season to get the Tigers on the board at 15:26.
The Silvertips were still on a power play after Woo's shorthanded goal, and they capitalized with Bear's second of the night at 15:55 to regain their two-goal lead.
Medicine Hat responded with a power play goal of their own before the end of the period from Andrew Basha. Liam Ruck curled at the half wall and fed a pass back to Basha. The Calgary Flames prospect walked in through the left circle and used an Everett defender as a screen to send a nice snapshot into the top left corner. The Calgary, Alberta native's eighth goal of the season cut the Silvertips' lead in half and made it a 3-2 game heading into the second period.
While the Tigers outshot the Silvertips heavily in the first period 15-8, they were outshot 11-7 in the middle frame. Jordan Switzer played great stopping all 11 shots he saw in the period, coming up big for the Tigers to keep the game close.
Ethan Neutens scored the lone goal in the second period with only 0:25 remaining. Neutens put away a rebound off of a Yaroslav Bryzgalov shot for his ninth tally of the season to tie the game 3-3.
Both teams played a great third period as the Tigers managed to put up five shots to try and pull ahead.
The Tigers' biggest opportunity of the period and possibly the evening came from a power play at 14:29 in the third period. With how close Saturday's matchup had been and time ticking down in the third, they were getting close to "next goal wins" territory. Both teams were connecting on their passes and being careful to minimize mistakes, making it hard for the other team to come back in the remaining time if they fell behind.
The Tigers moved the puck very well on their late power play and had a few great chances in tight but none found the back of the net.
Extra time was needed to decide a winner. Zackary Shantz was the eventual overtime hero for Everett, as he tallied his 23rd of the season at 2:54.
Switzer had an excellent night stopping 24 of 28 shots faced, and was a big reason why the Tigers held on for a point.
