Tigers Earn Series Split In Game 2 Win Over Rebels
March 30, 2024 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - The Medicine Hat Tigers, found their stride, dealt with pushback and found their way to series split through the first two games of the Eastern Conference Quarter Final with a 3-1 triumph over the Red Deer Rebels Saturday night at Co-op Place.
Co-op Place barely had time to sit down as Gavin McKenna (Whitehorse, YT) would open the scoring just 21 seconds into the game from Hunter St. Martin (Edmonton, AB) and the Tigers are off and running in Game 2. Both teams would have power play time with two opportunities each but neither the Tigers or Rebels could solve goaltenders Zach Zahara (Rockyview, AB) & Chase Wutzke.
Medicine Hat would keep that lead of one after 20 minutes of play.
Into the second the Tigers and Rebels would continue to be penalized regularly as shorthanded Rebels captain Kai Uchacz would break-in on a breakaway, but Zach Zahara would stand tall keeping the game in the lead for Medicine Hat. The Tigers would also kill-off a 5 on 3 for 1:23 only allowing one registered shot to keep things in their favour. At 9:22 just as the Tigers would have a man advantage expire, Reid Andresen (Saskatoon, SK) would walk-in and beat Chase Wutzke for some much-needed insurance as it would be a 2-0 Tiger lead. Gavin McKenna & Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB) would draw helpers. Finally for the first time in the playoffs would make pay-dirt on the power play as Cayden Lindstrom (Chetwynd, BC) would tip home his first of the postseason from Basha & McKenna at 15:28. Medicine Hat would take the three-goal lead to the third period.
In the third the Rebels began their push back in a big way firing 18 shots towards goaltender Zach Zahara and Ollie Josephson would solve the Tigers goaltender with his second of the playoffs at 6:32 to get the visitors within two.
Despite the 18-3 shot advantage, that's as close as the Rebel would get giving the Tigers their first playoff win and sending the series tied at 1-1 heading to Red Deer next week.
The scene changes to the Peavy Mart Centrium for Games 3 & 4 as the Tigers battle the Rebels. Both games will be at 7 PM and can heard on your home of the Tigers, Wild 94.5 with the Voice of the Tigers Gino De Paoli & Lance Doll.
