Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Medicine Hat, AB - The Medicine Hat Tigers were looking to jump closer to a playoff spot as they took on the lowly Kootenay Ice on Saturday night. However despite the Ice's poor record this season the arena in Cranbrook has always proved more difficult to win in for Medicine Hat, posting a 4-9-1-0 record at Western Financial Place.

In the opening period, the Tigers and Ice battled to what was an even period. Nick Schneider got the start once again for Medicine Hat as he went up against minutes cruncher Wyatt Hoflin. There was 28 shots fired at both nets in the period with the Ice having an advantage 16-12. Schneider was brilliant in the net once again as he kept the Tigers in the game more majority of the period as the Ice brought lots of pressure on the Tigers. Kootenay got rewarded late in the period as leading scorer Zak Zborosky found the back of the net for his 17th of the season, taking a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

The Tigers brought everything but the kitchen sink in the middle frame as they came out flying, changing momentum and firing 20 shots on goal on Wyatt Hoflin. Medicine Hat got rewarded for their pressure attack as Caleb Fantillo scored in his second straight game as rookie Cole Clayton picked up his first WHL point, collecting an assist on the play. Moments later an illadvised penalty by Kootenay was capitalized on by Ty Stanton as he connected on the power play for his 3rd of the season. Finally just before the buzzer sounded on the frame, a red hot Mark Rassell netted his 12th of the year as the Calgary product continues to have a career season. The intermission sounded and Medicine Hat took to the dressing room with a 3-1 lead.

The final period saw momentum switch once again as Kootenay pushed hard to try and tie the game. The Ice cut into the Tigers lead early just under 3 minutes into the period when Cale Fleury netted his 5th of the season. The game stayed 3-2 until under two minutes left when Chad Butcher scored a shorthanded goal, his second in as many games to give the Tabbies a 2 goal lead. Schneider was good in net in the period, stopping 11 of 12 shots and leading the Tigers to their third straight victory and 11th overall for the Calgary Flames prospect.

THREE STARS OF THE GAME:

1. TY STANTON - MH - (1G, 1A)

2. CALE FLEURY - KTY - (1G)

3. TANNER LISHCHYNSKY - KTY

Medicine Hat now opens a 4 game road trip to the West Coast starting Wednesday night when they visit the Island and the Victoria Royals.
