Tides Wash Away Bulls Winning Streak with 6-2 Win

Durham, NC - The Bulls nine game winning streak came to an end, falling 6-2 to Norfolk on Wednesday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Bulls fell short of completing a rare seven-game sweep over last place Norfolk as Ramon Ortiz was handed his first loss of the season as a Bull.
The Durham offense got out to an early 2-0 lead against Tides lefty Zach Britton. A two-out single by Justin Ruggiano put a man aboard in the first inning, and Chris Richard followed with a two-run blast to dead center field to put the Bulls on top. It was Richard's 16th home run of the season, second best on the team.
The Tides answered right back in the top of the second, loading the bases with nobody out for Blake Davis. After working the count full, Davis turned on a fastball and drove it over the wall in right for a grand slam. It was just his fourth home run of the season and 17th of his career in over 1700 professional at-bats.
They tacked on another run in the fifth on an RBI double by Lou Montanez, as Norfolk took command with a 5-2 lead. Ortiz would settle down after that, holding the Tides scoreless over his final three innings of work. Making just his second start since July 30, Ortiz allowed five earned runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings of work while walking one and striking out three.
The Bulls offense could not get anything going the rest of the way, as they finished the night 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and 1-for-16 over their last two games. Kam Mickolio tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief of Britton. Scoreless innings by Alberto Castillo and Frank Mata sealed the victory for Norfolk, who win against the Bulls for just the second time in their last 14 games.
The Bulls embark on a four game road trip with two games apiece in Gwinnett and Charlotte. They take on Gwinnett for the first of two tomorrow, as RHP Brian Baker (8-4 3.34) takes the hill against LHP Jose Ortegano (3-9 6.33).
