Allentown, PA - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by the score of 5-0 on Wednesday night in front of 9,137 at Coca-Cola Park. Chiefs starter Shairon Martis tossed his longest outing of the year and vaulted himself over the .500 mark with his eighth win of the year.

Syracuse (67-63) opened the scoring against Brian Mazone (6-13) in the first inning. Boomer Whiting and Danny Espinosa began with back to back base hits to open the ballgame and scored on consecutive plays. The first was on an error by the second baseman Ozzie Chavez, and the next was on a collision in right centerfield between Rich Thompson and Greg Dobbs. Thompson was charged with the error that allowed Espinosa to score.

Wilson Ramos hit his third home run as a Chief in the seventh inning to give Syracuse a 3-0 lead. Mazone was done after the seventh and in total he allowed six hits, three runs - two of which were earned - and struck out five.

Facing Oscar Villareal in the eighth, Boomer Whiting was hit by a pitch to lead off. He then stole second and was bunted to third by Espinosa. With Brian Bixler batting, Whiting charged for home and swiped the plate for the third time this season. It was also his 34th steal of the year.

Michael Stutes pitched the ninth for Lehigh Valley (52-79( and gave up a run on a Chase Lambin groundout to make it 5-0 in favor of Syracuse. Andrew Kown pitched the final 1 1/3 of the game for the Chiefs.

Martis pitched 7 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the year, and allowed just two hits while walking four and striking out five.

The Chiefs will return home to Alliance Bank Stadium on Thursday to start a two-game series with the Buffalo Bisons. Erik Arnesen (5-7, 3.71) is scheduled to start for Syracuse against Fernando Nieve (2-0, 5.24) for Buffalo. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
