Tides Score Five Unanswered to Take Series

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves (6-9) were shut down offensively by Norfolk for the second straight night, and the Tides capitalized on seven walks to send the G-Braves to a 5-1 loss on Thursday night at Coolray Field. Norfolk's three-run sixth erased what had been a 1-0 Gwinnett lead as the Tides took three games on the four-game series.

The G-Braves got off to a solid start, scoring the first run of the game in the second inning. Jordan Parraz doubled to right center to start of the frame, advanced third on a wild pitch and scored a sacrifice fly by Joe Leonard, making it 1-0.

Tim Corcoran cruised early with the lead, throwing five shutout innings. However, the veteran right-hander ran into trouble in the sixth inning as he walked the first two batters he faced. David Carpenter came in from the bullpen and got a quick out, but his luck changed as he allowed a single to Travis Ishikawa to load the bases. Back-to-back walks to L.J. Hoes and Yamaico Navarro followed, pushing two runs across. Luis Exposito capped the inning with a sacrifice fly scoring Ishikawa, making it 3-1 Tides.

The Tides did not stop there, scoring runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

In the seventh inning, Niuman Romero tripled to right-center and scored on an RBI single by Russ Canzler, while in the eighth inning, Navarro doubled and scored on a single by Jonathan Schoop, making it 5-1.

Tides' starter Zach Britton (W, 1-0) mowed down the Gwinnett lineup for 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and striking out two. Britton induced 13 groundouts in an economical 85-pitch outing. Alex Burnett added 2.0 scoreless innings and Scott Proctor pitched a scoreless non-save ninth.

Corcoran (L, 1-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs over 5.0 innings and striking out six. He walked four, but it was the last two that ended his night and led to the loss. Carpenter surrendered two more runs over 2.0 innings. Dusty Hughes yielded a run in the eighth and Ryan Buchter pitched a scoreless ninth.

Joe Terdoslavich had three of Gwinnett's seven hits, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Sean Kazmar added a 2-for-3 game, while Leonard had the lone RBI on 0-for-3 hitting. Tyler Pastornicky was removed from the game after fouling a pitch off his foot in the sixth inning and finished 0-for-3, ending his nine-game hitting streak.

Romero led the Tides, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Ishikawa, Hoes and Jason Pridie also added two-hit games for Norfolk.

The Gwinnett Braves open a four-game home-and-home series against the Charlotte Knights on Friday night at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill, SC. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 PM. Right-hander Omar Poveda (0-0, 3.27) will start for the G-Braves against right-hander Jason Berken (0-0, 0.00) of the Knights.
