Norfolk Tides News Release
Alex Cintron and Mike Costanzo helped Norfolk rally from a four-run deficit, as the Tides came back for an 8-7 win in 14 innings Wednesday night.
With the Tides trailing 7-3 in the 8th inning, Cintron lined a two-out, bases loaded double into right field that cleared the bases, bringing the Tides within one run.
Norfolk tied the score in the 9th frame, as Costanzo greeted Richmond closer Zach Schreiber with a long home run to lead off the inning, knotting the score at 7-7. It was the Tides' first home run hit at Harbor Park this season, and just the 5th overall for Norfolk.
After Costanzo's heroics, both bullpens traded zeros until the 14th inning, when Norfolk took advantage of some wildness by reliever Matt DeSalvo (1-3) to pull out the victory. Eider Torres led off the inning with an infield single, and a wild pitch moved him to second. After a walk to Oscar Salazar, DeSalvo retired Chris Roberson on a strikeout, but he walked Mike McCoy to load the bases. Cintron then lofted a deep fly ball over the head of Josh Anderson in center field, plating Torres and giving the Tides the come-from-behind win.
Of Norfolk's eight wins this season, six have been in comeback fashion.
Torres led the Tides 11-hit attack with four hits, including two doubles and an RBI. Cintron and Costanzo each had two hits for the Tides, who were playing their first game since Saturday night due to inclement weather.
Ryan Bukvich (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief. The Tides bullpen went 11.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits while striking out ten.
Richmond swiped eight bases in the contest, setting a franchise record. The eight stolen bases allowed tied Norfolk's franchise record, set twice in the same week during the 1977 season.
The 14-inning contest, as well as the 4 hour and 52 minute time of game, were both season-highs.
The Tides and Braves will meet again in less than 12 hours, as the two squads are slated to meet in a 12:15 contest Thursday afternoon from Harbor Park. Radhames Liz (0-2, 7.98) will take the mound for Norfolk, and he will be opposed by Richmond lefty Jo-Jo Reyes (0-0, 0.00).
