Tides' Hoes Steals Home to Break Hens' Hearts

July 24, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

On a day where Detroit Tigers' Fans witnessed not one, but two, heartbreaking losses to the White Sox, the woeful walk-off vibes trickled down to the Mud Hens, as the Norfolk Tides' L.J. Hoes stole home for an extra-inning 4-3 walk-off win over Toledo Sunday night.

Tigers' fans had their eyes glued to the action at Harbor Park, as the Hens sent Jordan Zimmermann to the mound Sunday night for the first of his MLB rehab pitching assignments. The AL pitcher of the month in April pitched a strong four innings while allowing only four singles, no runs, and struck out two. Mike Wright toed the rubber for the home Tides, and the big righty went 5.2 innings scattering five hits and allowing two runs while striking out six.

Toledo drew first blood when John Hicks drilled a double over the centerfielder's head scoring Dean Green and JaCoby Jones to make it 2-0 Hens in the second inning.

Thad Weber replaced Zimmermann on the mound in the fifth inning, and Norfolk took advantage of Zimmermann's departure by putting three runs on the board and taking the lead. Ozzie Martinez ripped a two-out, two-RBI triple to tie the game, 2-2, and then L.J. Hoes lofted an RBI single to center to put the Tides up 3-2.

Toledo seemed poised to tie or take back the lead in the top of the eighth inning, as Dixon Machado and Alex Presley singles left the speedy Hens at the corners with one out, but Casey McGehee bounced into a 6-4-3 inning ending double play. The Hens were able to knot it up at three in the top of the ninth when Steven Moya blasted his fourteenth home run of the season.

The Mud Hens' Preston Guilmet, who was summoned to pitch the tenth inning, allowed a one out triple off the bat of L.J. Hoes, and then opted for an intentional walk of Trey Mancini to set up the double play. Things took a turn for the worse when Guilmet attempted to pick of Hoes on third, which spurred Mancini to scamper to second. Mancini drew a throw and got himself caught in a pickle between first and second, allowing Hoes to steal home and spark the Tides to a 4-3 walkoff win.

Toledo heads to Durham Monday night to begin a three game set against the Bulls, which is slated for a 7:05 PM first pitch.

Toledo Tidbits:

Zimmermann Rehab Start- Detroit Tigers' GM Al Avila recently said that getting Jordan Zimmermann back in the starting rotation would be the best trade deadline move they could make. Zimmermann threw only 50 pitches, 38 for strikes.

Tough Day in Tigers' Organization- On a day in which the Detroit Tigers lost two games via a walk-off to the Chicago White Sox, the Mud Hens followed suit with a walk-off loss of their own to the Norfolk Tides. To make matters worse, two of the three losses involved the Hens/Tigers tying the game up in the ninth inning before dropping heartbreakers. Also, the Erie SeaWolves (AA affiliate of the Tigers) lost 2-1 to Bowie earlier Sunday.

McGehee Keeps on Mashing- Casey McGehee improved his season and team high hitting streak to 15 games Sunday night. The veteran third baseman has eight doubles and ten RBIs during the streak in which he is hitting .433. McGehee his having one of the best seasons of his professional baseball career, even if it is in AAA. Casey's biggest offensive output in the majors came in the 2010 season with the Milwaukee Brewers where he hit .285 with 23 home runs and 104 RBI and was voted the team MVP that season.
