Norfolk Tides News Release
L.J. Hoes swiped home plate during a wild sequence in the last of the 10th inning, giving the Tides a 4-3 win over the Toledo Mud Hens Sunday night at Harbor Park.
With the score tied at 3-3, Hoes ignited the game-winning rally by lining a triple to right-center field off of Preston Guilmet (3-2). After an intentional walk to Trey Mancini, Guilmet attempted a pickoff throw to third base, but Hoes slid back safely. Mancini was running from first on the play, and Toledo third baseman Casey McGehee threw towards second to try and retire Mancini, who remained in a rundown between first and second base. Hoes then raced home during the rundown, just beating Argenis Diaz' throw home to give Norfolk the win on a walk-off steal of home.
The victory helped Norfolk salvage a split of the four-game series and made a winner of Zach Phillips (7-3) after the left-hander escaped a bases loaded threat in the top of the tenth.
The Tides had led the contest 3-2 entering the ninth, but Steven Moya tied the game with a solo homer off of Jason Stoffel. The homer snapped an 11-game stretch in which Stoffel had not allowed an earned run.
Ozzie Martinez paced Norfolk's offense with three hits, including a two-run triple in a three-run fifth inning. Hoes added an RBI single in the frame, while Francisco Pena added three singles in the win.
In his third start with Norfolk since being optioned from Baltimore on July 8, Mike Wright scuffled early before rebounding with a strong finish. Wright yielded two runs on four hits over his first three innings before he bounced back by retiring eight consecutive batters from the third through sixth frames. He finished with six strikeouts and one walk over 5.2 innings of work, throwing 67 of his 97 pitches for strikes to put his ERA at 2.58 in six outings with Norfolk this season.
Toledo started Tigers right-hander Jordan Zimmermann on a Major League rehab assignment, and the 30-year-old right-hander allowed four hits over four shutout innings. Zimmermann, rehabbing a right neck strain, struck out two without walking a batter and threw 38 of his 50 pitches for strikes.
After an off day Monday, the Tides open up a three-game set against the Columbus Clippers Tuesday night at Harbor Park. Andy Oliver (1-1, 2.51) gets the start for Norfolk and is slated to be opposed by right-hander Adam Plutko (2-3, 5.10).
Notes: The temperature at the 6:05 first pitch was 94 degrees...Richard Rodriguez struck out all four batters he faced in a perfect 1.1 innings of relief...Tom Gorzelanny made his Norfolk debut after being signed by Baltimore as a free agent, allowing a hit and a walk in one-third of an inning...With three hits Sunday, Ozzie Martinez now has six multi-hit games since the All-Star break.
