Columbus Downs Pawtucket in Saturday Night Slugfest
July 24, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release
Trading runs for the batter part of five innings, Columbus and Pawtucket went punch for punch, but the 10,870 fans in attendance went home happy as their Clippers took their third straight game in the series with a final score of 10-6.
After being shutout the night before, the Red Sox wasted no time in getting on the board via Chris Marrero's two out solo home run to the bleachers in left field in the top of the first inning, but the Clippers tied the game in the bottom of the inning with Jesus Aguilar's RBI single scoring Ronny Rodriguez from third.
The RBI represented Aguilar's league leading 58th of the season.
After the PawSox retook the lead with a run in the top of the second, Columbus battled back to take a 3-2 lead with an RBI single from Guillermo Quiroz and an RBI sacrifice fly from Yhoxian Medina.
Pawtucket's second error of the game in the bottom of the third inning allowed the Clippers to take a 4-2 lead. Although Adam Moore grounded into a double play, he was able to bring home Giovanny Urshela from third to extend the lead to two.
The lead would not last long for Columbus. Staying par for the theme of the evening, the Red Sox scored three times in the top of the fourth to take the lead back at 5-4.
Of course, being a true tennis match, the two teams battled back and forth the rest of the night, but a four run fourth inning and two more in the fifth propelled the Clippers to their victory.
Clippers starter in right hander Mike Clevinger (10-1) went five innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits while walking three batters and striking out one.
His opposition in William Cuevas (6-5) worked four and 2/3 innings, getting tagged for 10 runs (eight earned) on 11 hits as he walked three and fanned four.
The Clippers and PawSox will conclude their four game set tomorrow afternoon in the Arena District with the first pitch slated for 4:05 p.m. Southpaw Ryan Merritt (5-7, 4.44 ERA) is scheduled to showcase his talents on the mound for Columbus against righty Justin Haley (3-3, 3.82 ERA) for Pawtucket.
Hey fans! Tomorrow Jake "The Diamond Dog" will be here at the ballpark! Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center presents the best dog-gone dog in baseball as he performs tricks in between innings.
