Norfolk Tides News Release

July 19, 2007 - Val Majewski lined a go-ahead two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the 6th inning, lifting the Tides to a 5-3 win over the Toledo Mud Hens Thursday afternoon from Harbor Park.

With the score tied 3-3 in the 6th, J.R. House started Norfolk's decisive rally by drawing a one-out walk which chased Toledo starter Jordan Tata (3-3) from the contest. Reliever Preston Larrison retired the first batter he faced via strikeout, but uncorked a wild pitch during that at-bat which moved House to second. The Hens intentionally walked Terry Tiffee to get to Majewski, but Larrison uncorked his second wild pitch of the frame during Majewski's at-bat, putting runners on second and third. Majewski then lined a 3-2 pitch into left-center field, scoring both House and Tiffee and giving Norfolk a 5-3 lead.

Norfolk's bullpen made sure that the lead held, as the trio of Francis Beltran (2-6), Jim Hoey and Cory Doyne combined to hurl five shutout innings, allowing two hits while striking out six. Hoey struck out four in two innings, and the 23-year-old has now pitched 16.0 straight scoreless innings, striking out 20 over that stretch.

Doyne recorded the final three outs of the contest for his league leading 28th save, and the Tides' closer has now converted 23 straight save opportunities.

The Mud Hens jumped out to an early lead in the contest, as Chris Shelton doubled home Erick Almonte with one out in the first to put Toledo up 1-0.

Norfolk answered in the bottom of the first, taking a 2-1 lead on RBI singles by House and Tiffee.

Toledo re-took the lead in the top of the 4th, plating two unearned runs on a sacrifice fly be Kevin Hooper and a two-out single by Erick Almonte, but Norfolk tied the score thanks to back-to-back doubles by Cervenak and Tiffee.

With his double, Cervenak has now hit safely in 7 straight games and 20 of his last 21.

Tiffee finished 3-for-3 with two runs driven in, while Majewski finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases.

The win gave Norfolk a split of the four-game series, and the Tides have now won or split each of the past 10 series they've played in.

The Tides will welcome the Columbus Clippers to town on Friday night for a four-game series, with first pitch from Harbor Park slated for 7:15. In a battle of southpaws, Kurt Birkins (6-2, 2.96) will take the hill for Norfolk against Columbus lefty John Lannon (2-1, 1.55).
