Willmar Stingers News Release
WILLMAR, Minn. - Ty Tice has been nothing but consistent for the Stingers this summer, and Friday night he turned in one of the best performances by a Stingers pitcher this season.
Tice, who hadn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his starts, tossed 8 2/3 innings of four-hit ball to help give the Stingers their third-straight win with a 9-1 victory over Thunder Bay on Friday night at Bill Taunton Stadium.
Tice retired the side in order in his first inning, and the Stingers offense took over from there. Willmar (25-21, 7-3 second half) scored a run in the bottom of the first inning off Thunder Bay (9-35, 3-7) starter Cameron Churchill on a sacrifice fly by Greg Lambert.
After that first inning, Tice was on cruise control the rest of the way. He allowed just two base runners in his first seven innings, and had a no-hit bid going into the fifth inning. He eventually tied his season-high with nine strikeouts and didn't walk a single batter throughout the night.
The Stingers offense continued to pour it on the rest of the game, highlighted by a four-run third inning to put the game out of reach. Devin Foyle (Kansas) had the big blow in the inning, clearing the bases on a bases-loaded double to make it 5-0.
Willmar scored a pair more in the fifth, which included a double by Greg Lambert to drive in a run. Lambert finished the night with two RBIs to bring his season total to 40. Danny Mayer had an RBI fielder's choice a batter later to bring the lead to 7-0. Mayer finished with a three RBI night, and now has 23 RBIs in just 16 games.
The Stingers went on to add single runs in the fifth and eighth innings before the Border Cats finally broke up TIce's shutout bid with two outs in the ninth.
After a 3-0 homestand, the Stingers now head on the road for a pair of games at Waterloo before the All-Star break starts on Monday.
