Thurston's Call-up Brings Garciaparra To Ottawa

OTTAWA - What's in a name? Lynx fans hope SS Michael Garciaparra takes after his big brother. He fills the roster spot left open by 2B Joe Thurston's call-up to Philadelphia after Chase Utley's injury.

Garciaparra, 24, is the younger brother of Dodgers 3B Nomar Garciaparra. The younger Garciaparra was hitting .247 with 3 HR and 19 RBI in 65 games at Double-A Reading. He was Seattle's first pick, 36th overall in the 2001 Amateur Draft. He has a .264 average with 15 HR and 173 RBI in his six professional seasons.

Thurston, 27, was named Phillies Minor League Player of the Week on Tuesday. He is second in the International League with eight triples. Thurston is batting .277 for the Lynx this season, with 3 HR and 42 RBI. He is tied for the team lead in hits (108) and is second on the club in stolen bases (14), walks (35) and runs scored (52).
