Thurston County Rallies For 10-7 Win Over Pippins

Yakima Valley Pippins News Release

YAKIMA, Wash. - The Thurston County Senators rallied for six runs in the 9th inning to erase a two-run deficit and leave County Stadium with a 10-7 victory Tuesday night.

The Pippins (2-3 overall, 1-2 West Coast League) got on the board with an early run in the 1st inning, but the Senators (3-2) built a 4-1 lead with two runs in each of the 3rd and 4th innings off of starter Mitch Yada (Central Washington University), who went 5 2/3 innings in his first start of the summer.

The Pippins rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 4th inning and tied the game with a run in the 5th. The scoring continued in the 6th, as the Pippins took advantage of an RBI double by JC Snyder and an RBI single by Mitch Skaggs to build a 6-4 lead through 6 innings.

That score would hold until the top of the 9th, when Connor Lau, who had recorded saves in each of his first two tries, found himself in hot water. After striking out the first hitter, Trevor Inman, Lau also struck out pinch-hitter Kameron Banister, but the ball got away from catcher Jake Roberts and allowed Banister to reach. Over the course of the next two hitters, the Pippins committed a pair of errors, both of which could have ended the game. The second error tied the game at 6, before three straight base hits gave the Senators a 10-7 lead. None of the runs were earned off of Lau, who suffered his first loss of the summer.

"Obviously, it's (defense) been one of our weak points, but we work on it every day so we'll get better. That's for sure," said Ryan Yamane, who had an RBI double in the 4th inning.

In the bottom of the 9th, the Pippins rallied for one run on a Taylor Snyder RBI single, but the rally would come to a halt there, giving the Senators the win.

The Pippins finish the inaugural homestand with a 2-3 record and now embark on the first road trip in team history, beginning tomorrow in Corvallis, Oregon against the Corvallis Knights. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. and Reed Garrett has been announced as the starter for Yakima Valley. All six games on the upcoming road trip to Corvallis and Klamath Falls can be heard live on 1460 ESPN Yakima and online at 1460ESPNYakima.com.
