Evansville Thunderbolts News Release

EVANSVILLE, IN - The Evansville Thunderbolts invites the public to Military Night on Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Ford Center, where we will celebrate and honor those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces. This is the first of two Military Nights that the Thunderbolts have planned for the 2016-17 season.

Before the Thunderbolts take on Macon Mayhem at 7:15 p.m., members of Rolling Thunder will surround the lower bowl with flags for the playing of the National Anthem. During the first intermission, Rolling Thunder will honor the armed forces in a video that will be shown on the jumbotron, as well as a special dedication for the POW/MIA Chair of Honor, which will be accompanied by the playing of Taps.

The City of Evansville and the Thunderbolts' iconic P-47 depiction in the team's logo speaks to the high level of respect that the area has for the armed forces and the city's historical importance during WWII. The name "Evansville Thunderbolts" was selected through an online fan vote. In 1942, Evansville was selected as a location to manufacture the P-47 Thunderbolt after Republic Aviation needed to expand its operations in order to meet the war demand. The factory was built adjacent to the Evansville Airport, a site that would later house Whirlpool. According to newspapers during the time, more than 6,200 P-47 Thunderbolts were manufactured in the Evansville location.

WEEKEND PREVIEW

Evansville will look to chalk up its first win of the season against Roanoke on Friday, Nov. 11 at the Berglund Center. Roanoke (3-2-1) is coming off a win against Fayetteville and an overtime loss against Huntsville. The Thunderbolts are 0-2 against the Rail Yard Dawgs this season. Then, it is back-to- -more- back home games against Macon Mayhem on Saturday, Nov. 12 and Sunday, Nov. 13. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively. The Thunderbolts are looking for payback after Macon (5-1-1) swept Evansville on the road one week ago.
