Windy City ThunderBolts News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL - After Nick Oddo's walk-off home run in the ninth inning beat the ThunderBolts in game one of a doubleheader, the Bolts came back with two runs in the seventh inning in game two to defeat the Schaumburg Boomers 2-1 at Boomers Stadium Thursday afternoon.

Game one was a continuation of a rain out that started on Wednesday night. At the start of play on Thursday, the Bolts (34-48) led 1-0 on an Axel Johnson home run. That remained the score into the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Boomers (40-41) put runners at the corners and executed a double steal to tie the score.

Derek Bangert's RBI single in the seventh inning scored Larry Balkwill, who had doubled, and made it 2-1. Schaumburg answered, though, in the bottom of the inning with a Sean Godfrey RBI hit that evened the score.

Oddo led off the ninth and hit Joel Toribio's first pitch over the right field wall.

Zac Westcott allowed just one run in eight innings but didn't factor in the decision. Jake Joyce (3-1) retired two batters for the win and Toribio (1-3) threw only one pitch and took the loss.

Game two was another pitchers' duel as the Bolts managed just one hit off of Gunnar Kines over the first six innings.

Schaumburg got on the board in the third when Zach Weigel walked and scored on a Collin Ferguson sacrifice fly. That was the only run that Eddie Avila allowed in 4.2 innings.

The ThunderBolts were down to their final out in the seventh inning when Bangert kept the game alive with a single. Tyler Straub followed with a single and Matt Brown's base hit tied the score at one. Back-to-back walks forced in the winning run with Joe Becht picking up the RBI.

Drew Peden (3-2) retired all four batters he faced for the win and Kines (6-2) took the tough-luck loss, allowing two runs in 6.2 innings.

The ThunderBolts return home to start their final home stand of the year on Friday night. They start a three-game series with the Washington Wild Things with Patrick Ledet (5-7, 4.99) starting against Jake Belinda (1-0, 5.06). It is Superhero Night presented by Tampico Beverages with fireworks following the game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
