CRESTWOOD, IL - The ThunderBolts scored a run in the ninth inning and put the tying run at third base with one out but came up short in a 4-3 loss to the Lake Erie Crushers at Standard Bank Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Jonathan McCray's third-inning triple helped the ThunderBolts (12-26) get on the board first as he scored on a Tim Zier sacrifice fly.
They held the 1-0 lead into the sixth inning, when Sean Hurley led off for Lake Erie (23-16) by reaching on an error. Douglas Trimble's double scored Hurley to tie the score. Trimble crossed the plate on Dustin Williams's single, giving Lake Erie their first lead at 2-1.
The Crushers scored two more runs in the seventh inning on three singles, including a two-run hit from Hurley that extended their lead to 4-1.
Ronnie Healy put the ThunderBolts back on the board with a solo home run in the seventh, the first homer of his professional career.
In the ninth inning, Blair Beck was hit by a pitch and Healy walked, putting two on with no outs. After a fielder's choice put McCray at first base, Omar Obregon's single scored a run and put runners at the corners with one out. Zier, though, hit a groundball to the shortstop that ended the game on a double play.
Alex Romero (4-3) allowed two runs in seven innings for the win and Zac Westcott (2-6) did not allow an earned run over six innings but he took the loss. Justin Sinibaldi pitched the ninth for his ninth save.
The ThunderBolts take Monday off before beginning a three-game series in Pennsylvania against the Washington Wild Things on Tuesday. Game one of the series starts at 6:05 and features Jake Welch (3-1, 5.17) on the mound against Washington's Thomas Dorminy (5-2, 2.54). The broadcast can be heard through wcthunderbolts.com.
