Lake Erie Crushers News Release
CRESTWOOD, ILLINOIS. - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, took advantage of a few mistakes by the ThunderBolts and used some timely hitting to clinch their sixth consecutive road series with a 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon.
Lake Erie starter Alex Romero (4-3) went seven innings against Windy City, which was tied for his longest start of the season. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four.
The ThunderBolts got out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning. A leadoff triple by Jonathan McCray led to the first run after Tim Zier's sacrifice fly.
The Crushers finally got to Windy City starter Zac Westcott (2-6) in the sixth inning. Sean Hurley reached on an error by third baseman Tyler Straub. Later in the inning with one out, Doug Trimble doubled into the right field corner and Hurley raced around to score. Trimble took third on an error by the right fielder Axel Johnson.
Dustin Williams stepped to the plate with the infield drawn in and he singled to right, giving Lake Erie a 2-1 lead. Both runs were unearned by Westcott who went six innings while allowing five hits.
The big blow came in the seventh against reliever Austin Sweet. The Crushers put two on with nobody out after a bunt single from Cameron Newell and then a single by Aaron Hill. A ground out to first by Kewby Meyer moved the runners up and Hurley followed with a sharp single up the middle. Both runs scored and the Crushers led 4-1. Hurley finished 3-4 with two RBIs.
Windy City got a run back in the seventh after Ronnie Healy homered off of Romero but Lake Erie still led 4-2 entering the ninth.
Justin Sinibaldi was called upon to close the game out. The first two batters for Windy City reached before McCray grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice. Omar Obregon singled home a run, cutting the deficit to one. Zier was next but he grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. Sinibaldi picked up his ninth save of the season.
Lake Erie (23-16) remains one game back of first place with the win. Windy City falls to 12-26 with the loss. The Crushers will begin a three game set with a doubleheader against Traverse City on Wednesday. Game one begins at 5:05 CDT.
