Wichita Thunder News Release
Allen, TX- Trailing 2-0 entering the third period, Wichita (30-12-2) exploded for four unanswered and won the battle for first place, 4-2, against the Allen Americans (26-11-7) Thursday night at the Allen Event Center. Dustin Donaghy, playing against his former team, had a goal and an assist and Jarred Mohr also added a pair for the Thunder. It was the first win in regulation against Allen all-time and the first win at the Allen Event Center. Wichita increases its lead by three points over the Americans for first place in the Berry Conference and is the first team to 30 wins this season.
Allen took advantage of a late penalty in the first period to grab a 1-0 lead as newcomer Adam Pineault scored with six seconds to go in the period. The Americans added to their lead in the second as Colton Yellow Horn took a pass from behind the Thunder net and made it 2-0. Wichita had several odd-man chances, but unable to solve Allen goalie Rejean Beauchemin.
In the third, Donaghy (5) cut the lead to 2-1 when he came down the right wall into the Allen zone and from his off-wing, threw a puck to the net that got through Beauchemin. Six minutes later, Donaghy blasted a shot from the high slot that was tipped in by RG Flath (11) and tied the game at two on the power play. Wichita took its first lead at 16:09 when Flath won a face-off back to Mohr and he found the back of the net to make it 3-2. Mohr added an empty-net goal and Wichita held off the Americans for a 4-2 win.
It was the third time this season the two teams met in a battle for first place at the Allen Event Center. Wichita is now 3-2-0 against Allen, stopped a two-game slide to the Americans and extended its winning streak to five games. Flath extended his goal-scoring streak to five games and it was Mohr's first multi-goal game of the season. The Thunder also earned its fifth win this season when trailing after two periods. Wichita has outscored its opponents 60-38 in the third period.
