Kansas City Mavericks News Release
RAPID CITY, South Dakota - The Missouri Mavericks (26-15-4) scored three unanswered goals in the second period en route to a 4-2 win over the Rapid City Rush (24-15-4) Thursday night at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Arena. Andrew Favot had a goal and two assists in the win and Sebastien Thinel earned an assist in the win. Thinel is now just one point shy from becoming just the seventh player in Central Hockey League (CHL) history to record 700 points. Goaltender Charlie Effinger stopped 37 of 39 shots for the Mavericks' fourth straight win. The teams will battle again Friday night as the Mavericks will try for a three-game sweep over the Rush.
"Great effort tonight, our penalty kill was very good," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "Smitty (Brandon Smith) got us going on the shorthanded goal and his line along with Kris Hogg had a great game."
Missouri took a 1-0 lead at the 8:44 mark on a shorthanded goal by Brandon Smith. Favot came into the Rush zone on a two-on-one and fed Smith who buried his second goal of the season. Rapid City answered just over four minutes later on a slap shot by former Maverick Dominic D'Amour. It marked his first goal in his first game with Rapid City. Shawn Limpright scored a shorthanded goal on a two-on-one break to give Rapid City a 2-1 lead at the 18-minute mark of the first period. The Rush held a one-goal lead after the first 20 minutes and they also held a one-shot lead over the Mavericks at 14-13.
It was all Missouri in the second period as the Mavericks scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead. Ed McGrane tied the game and scored safely in his third straight game at the 3:42 mark. He was assisted by Andrew Courtney and Sebastien Thinel. The assist for Thinel marked his 699th CHL point, just one point shy of becoming the seventh player in league history to record 700 points. Favot gave Missouri the lead when he banged home a loose puck in front of the net for his second point of the night on a five-on-three power play goal. Finally, Dale Mahovsky wristed a shot from the right slot to give the Mavericks a two-goal lead. Favot and Dave Simoes earned the assists on the play
The Mavericks and goaltender Charlie Effinger did not allow the Rush back into the game stopping all 10 shots in the final period. Rapid City outshot the Mavericks 39-33 in the game, but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks skated to their fourth straight victory. Missouri finished 1-for-4 on the power play and killed all three of Rapid City's power play chances.
The Mavs and Rush will close out their three-game series Friday night in Rapid City. Missouri will then head home for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday, February 17 and 18.
