
Bucks Stung by Bees

LAREDO, TX: The Laredo Bucks, of the Central Hockey League, were defeated by the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 5-3.
The Laredo Bucks and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees played in front of over 7,500 fans for the Annual McDonalds Kids Day Game on Thursday morning. The last time these two teams met was in the valley, where the Bucks won in overtime 1-0.
The Bucks started the first period flat and the Bees were able to jump to a 3-0 lead. The Bees poked the puck away from Torrie Jung and Kirill Startsev jammed in the puck from the bottom of the circle at 9:07. Dan Gendur scored the next goal for the Bees, on the powerplay at 12:33. Tomas Klempa scored an even strength goal at 14:44 The Bucks pulled netminder Torrie Jung after the third goal and put Ryan Rondeau in net. Torrie Jung had faced 12 shots, with 9 saves. Justin Styffe dropped the gloves with Kirill Startsev at 15:07. The Bucks got on the board late in the first, when Trevor Hunt scored his first goal as a Laredo Buck at 17:15. Matt Boyd and Neil Trimm assisted on the goal, cutting the Bees lead to 3-1. Both teams each had 12 shots on net in the period.
The second period was a scoreless one. Both teams had several powerplay opportunities, but neither team was able to convert. The Bucks and the Bees both had 8 shots on goal during the second period.
The final period of play started off with a breakaway goal from Neil Trimm at 1:54. Trimm was assisted by Matt Boyd and Rusty Masters. The goal made it a one goal game at 3-2. The Bees battled back and scored two powerplay goals to give them a 5-2 lead. Erik Boisvert made a turnaround shot from the bottom of the circle on a delayed penalty call at 12:41. Rusty Masters and Adam Rivet had assists on the goal. A.J. Hau dropped the mitts with Brady Leavold at 16:49. The Bucks tried to stage a comeback, but a late penalty call forced Rondeau to stay in net.
The Laredo Bucks will now go on a ten day road-trip, where they will play 4 games. They will face the Texas Brahmas on Saturday, February 11th, in North Richland Hills. The Bucks return home Wednesday, February 22nd, where they will once again face the Killer Bees. The puck will drop at 7pm at the Laredo Energy Arena.
