Wichita Thunder News Release

Wichita, KS (October 12th) - Matt Summers scored the only goal during a five-player shootout on Saturday afternoon to give Wichita a 4-3 victory over the Tulsa Oilers at the Wichita Ice Center. Both teams played in their only exhibition game to conclude training camp with the regular season kicking off next week.

Evan Carriere got the scoring started at 11:21 of the first period right after the Thunder were able to kill off a penalty and gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead. Wichita tied the game 43 seconds later as Burke Gallimore found a loose puck and buried it at 12:03.

The Thunder took a 2-1 lead in the second period when Paul Kurceba got it back on the blue line and fired a shot towards the net that found its way through. The power play goal gave the Thunder its first lead of the game at 16:09.

Tulsa scored the next two, both in the third period. Ryan Barlock tied it at two with a low blistering slap shot from the left point at 5:55. At 12:15, Ryan Cramer re-gained the lead for the Oilers as he received a pass from Fox and beat John Griggs. Wichita would answer just over four minutes later when Gallimore added his second goal of the contest at 16:20 on a beautiful passing play that locked the game at three.

After regulation was not enough, the game went straight to a five-player shootout. Both goalies were solid in between the pipes as Joe Perricone was able to stop the first two shooters for the Thunder. Matt Summers scored in round three as he put it over Perricone's glove. Griggs shut the door the rest of the way as Brett Skalski and Kyle Leahy were unable to beat him and the Thunder claimed a come-from-behind 4-3 win in a shootout.

The Thunder will host its 5th annual golf tournament at Willowbend Golf Club on Monday, October 14th and Opening Night on Friday, October 18th against Rapid City, presented by the US Army and Subway. On Saturday, October 19th, the annual Block Party will rock the house, presented by Toyota and the US Army. Details on the Block Party will be announced this week.
