Wichita Thunder News Release
THUNDER EDGE TARANTULAS- Scott Allison's fifth goal of the season, midway through the third period, snapped a 1-1 tie and gave rookie goaltender Jason Flick his first pro victory on Friday night at the Kansas Coliseum. Rookie Mike Carter scored Wichita's first goal, taking the puck at center ice and blowing by the Topeka defense.
THUNDER DROP LUBBOCK IN FINAL PERIOD- Veterans Travis Clayton, Scott Allison and Jason Duda rose to the occasion again, combining for two third period goals, breaking a 1-1 tie and leading the Thunder to a 3-1 victory on Saturday in Lubbock. Clayton and Allison scored the goals, both assisted by Duda and rookie defenseman Nate Metcalf. Goaltender Jamie Vandespyker made a season-high 33 saves, earning his third straight victory. Newcomer Paul Esdale scored Wichita's first goal, as the Thunder held Lubbock 0-11 on the power play. Clayton, Allison and Duda have eight points each on the season and have scored in all four games. They are all one point off the CHL leaders.
FAST START- Wichita's 4-0 start matches the record for the best start in franchise history. Only the 1993-94 Thunder team, which won the CHL Title, also started 4-0. Wichita, the CHL's only unbeaten team, has also won their first two road contests for the first time in franchise history. The Thunder's longest home winning streak to start a season is four, achieved by both the 1994 and 1995 Thunder Championship teams.
THUNDER TV- The Thunder coach's show will air every Saturday at Noon on Cox Cable Channel 22, courtesy of the City of Park City. The coach's show, featuring Joel T. Lomurno, Derek Laxdal and a Thunder player will be taped every Monday Night at 5:00 PM at BG Bolton's, 21st and Maize Road. Fans are welcome to attend and enter a weekly drawing for free Thunder tickets.
SUFFOCATING DEFENSE- Through four games, the Thunder are allowing a CHL-low six goals against, and have allowed more than one goal just one time. The Thunder lead the CHL with a 1.50 goals against average and are allowing just 27.5 shots per game, second best in the CHL. Amazingly, Wichita has allowed just two even strength goals this season.
PROMOTION CHANGE- The Thunder will wear KU jerseys this Friday versus Oklahoma City, sponsored by Lampton Welding Supply, however; the Blazers will not be wearing OU jerseys. The KU-OU match-up and jersey auction will now take place on Saturday, March 5th.
THUNDERBOLTS- The Thunder have outscored their opponents 6-2 in the third period...Scott Allison is riding a CHL-best four-game goal scoring streak...Jason Duda is riding a CHL-best four-game assist streak...Allison and Travis Clayton lead the CHL in plus/minus, at +6...Jason Flick and Jamie Vandespyker both rank among the top five CHL goaltenders...Head Coach Derek Laxdal won his 50th game on Friday...Enforcer Derek Parker had an assist in both games this weekend.
