New Mexico Scorpions News Release
SCORPIONS RECAP â
SCORPIONS 2, CORPUS CHRISTI 1 â Mike Oliveira scored twice in a 1:39 span of the second period for the only offense the Scorpions would need as they claimed a 2-1 victory over Corpus Christi on Friday. Oliveira struck on the power play at 4:09 of the second, scoring from the slot after a pass from Konrad McKay. Oliveira found the net again as Randy Murphy found him streaking behind the Rayz defense before lacing a shot over the blocker of goalie Brent Zelenewich. Miguel Beaudry stole the show with 40 saves, including 17 stops on 18 shots in the third period. Ryan Carter ruined Beaudry's shutout bid with a rebound goal with 8:49 left in the third period.
SCORPIONS 6, MEMPHIS 3 â The RiverKings jumped to a 3-0 lead before the first period was half over, but New Mexico stormed back with six unanswered goals for a 6-3 win on Saturday. Mike Oliveira scored twice for the second straight game, while Aaron Schneekloth tied a CHL season-high with three assists. Shawn Legault added a Gordie Howe hat trick for the Scorps with a goal, assist and a fight. Miguel Beaudry made 27 save as all but two Scorpions recorded at least a point. Peter Ambroziak broke a 3-3 tie with the eventual game-winner 2:51 into the third period.
SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS â
TOPEKA â The Scorpions visit the Kansas capital for the first time on Tuesday. The Tarantulas relocated from Indianapolis in the offseason, but have no returning players from the old Ice franchise. Topeka has struggled offensively, with just six goals scored in five games. Rookie Dallas Flaman leads the way with four points (1g-3a), followed by former Austin forward Tab Lardner (2g) and former Lubbock and Corpus Christi forward Cosmo Dupaul (2a). Rookie Dwayne Bateman (1-0-0, 2.11 GAA) got the team's first win in Bossier-Shreveport on Thursday while highly touted David St. Germain is 0-4 with a 3.11 GAA.
OKLAHOMA CITY â The Blazers have just one win in their first four games, but made big news last week when they signed Dallas Stars forward Brenden Morrow. Morrow registered his first CHL point with an assist at Odessa on Saturday. Michel Beausoleil leads the Blazers with three goals and five points. Goalies Sean Connors (1-1-0, 1.50 GAA) and Boyd Ballard (0-1-1, 2.42 GAA) are back as the tandem between the pipes. The Blazers are tied for second allowing just 2.25 goals per game but are also second from the bottom with just seven goals scored in four outings.
COLORADO â The Eagles suffered their first loss on Saturday when Corpus Christi scored five straight goals in a 6-2 win. Colorado is leading the CHL with an average of almost 40 shots per game while allowing just 27 opposition attempts per contest. Rookie forward Kevin Marsh has six points (3g-3a) to pace the Eagles while Chris Hartsburg (2g-2a) has four points. Avalanche prospect Tyler Weiman is 2-0 with just one goal allowed while returnee Gian Baldrica is
1-1-0 with a 3.05 GAA. The Eagles have eight players back from last year's team.
POWER ME UP â After going 5-for-12 on the power play during the first two games of the 2004-05 season on the road, the Scorpions did the same exact thing in the first two games at home. All told, the Scorpions are 10-for-24 with the man advantage this season, a whopping 41.7 percent and in first place in the CHL ahead of Odessa (28.6 percent). Mike Oliveira leads the CHL with four power play goals. Ten of the team's 16 goals this season have come with the man advantage.
STINGERS â The Scorpions are tied for second with Rio Grande Valley in the CHL averaging four goals per game... Odessa leads the way at 4.25... The Scorpions have been outscored 7-2 in the first period but have outscored their opponents by an 8-2 margin in the middle stanza... Likewise, the Scorpions have been outshot 59-41 in the first period of their four games but have turned the tables to the tune of 57-28 in the second period... Mike Oliveira is tied for fourth in the CHL with five goals on the young season... All players on the Scorpions roster except goalie Guy St. Vincent and forward Andrew Katzberg have recorded a point... Right now, the Northwest Division that the Scorpions are a part of is the CHL's best, recording an 11-6-0 record so far.
