Oakley CHL Player & Goaltender of the Week Announced
Published on November 1, 2004 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
New Mexico center Mike Oliveira and Rio Grande Valley goaltender Jeff Levy are this week's recipients of the Oakley CHL Player and Goaltender of the Week awards. Oliveira paced the Scorpions to back-to-back home wins Friday and Saturday, while Levy backstopped the Killer Bees to a pair of consecutive wins on home ice. Both players won weekly awards twice last season; Oliveira as CHL Player of the Week in weeks 7 and 15, and Levy as CHL Goaltender of the Week in weeks 2 and 8.
Oliveira, a 25-year old center, keyed New Mexico wins over Corpus Christi and Memphis this weekend. Oliveira had both goals in the Scorpions' 2-1 home opening win over Corpus Christi October 29th, then scored twice on the power play to help New Mexico come back from a 3-0 deficit to beat Memphis 6-3 the following night. Oliveira leads the CHL with four power play goals. Also warranting consideration as Oakley CHL Player of the Week were Fort Worth defenseman Brad Lukowich (two game winning goals), Corpus Christi left winger Ryan Carter (three goals in two games), Tulsa left winger Dan Gravell (five points in two losses) and Colorado right winger Kevin Marsh (three goals and an assist in two games).
Levy led the Killer Bees to a successful home debut October 29th, making 31 saves in Rio Grande's 5-3 win over Laredo. The following night Levy just missed posting his first shutout of the season, allowing a single goal with 1:50 left to play in a 5-1 win over visiting Austin. Levy sports a perfect 2-0-0 record with a goals against average of 2.00 and a save percentage of .938 this season. Also considered as Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week were New Mexico's Miguel Beaudry (2-0-0, 95.7 save percentage) and Corpus Christi's Josh Blackburn, who had 51 saves in a 6-2 win at Colorado on October 30th to give his club their first win of the season.
