Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS - Rapid City netminder Tim Boron has a history of shutting down his former team and that continued on Friday night as Wichita (2-9-4) was stymied in a 4-1 loss to the Rush (11-1-0) at INTRUST Bank Arena. Jesse Dudas scored the Thunder's only tally of the night and his second of the season to negate any thoughts of a shut out for the visitors from the Black Hills. Wichita drops to 0-2-0 against Rapid City this season with another meeting tomorrow night against the Rush.
The Rush got off to a quick start, taking an early lead just five minutes in. After a turnover, Justin Faryna caught a pass at the right hashmark between the circles and found the back of the net for his fifth of the season. Quickly after, Wichita received a power play when Gardner, KS native Jared Brown was sent off for hooking. Rapid City was able to stave off any attack and finished the first 20 minutes up 1-0.
The second period was a microcosm of how the season has gone for Wichita to this point. Eric Giosa got to a loose puck in the slot and his turnaround wrist shot hit teammate Scott Brannon, redirected off a Thunder player's body and trickled over the goal line to make it 2-0. At 13:13, Winston Day Chief led an odd man chance up the ice, fed a pass to Konrad Reeder who tucked it past Torrie Jung for the 3-0 lead.
Wichita had some opportunities in the final 20 minutes after unloading 16 shots on Boron, but he continued to shut the door. The Rush then added to the lead with a shorthanded goal from Kyle Stroh at 9:22 that seemingly put the game out of reach. Dudas gave the Thunder some life at 14:39 when his initial shot was blocked by a defender, but he stayed with it to unload a blast into the back of the net to make it 4-1. Down the stretch, Wichita played with some urgency trying to get back into the game. Nick McParland had a chance from the slot area denied by Boron and as he followed up for a rebound, a mad scramble ensued. The puck slid behind the net and Boron was able to get out of the situation without giving up another goal.
Wichita continues to look for its first win at home this season after seeing its home record dip to 0-6-2. Booras added his 14th point of the season with an assist on the only Thunder goal of the night. Jung took the loss, stopping 30 of 34 shots. Boron won for the 10th time this season, stopping 39 of 40 shots he faced.
Wichita went 0-for-4 on the power play while Rapid City was 0-for-1.
The Thunder face the Rush tomorrow night to complete a weekend set at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night is SpongeBob SquarePants Night as the popular Nickelodeon character returns for the third year in a row to root on the Boys in Blue and entertain the children.
Individual game tickets are on sale now. Season tickets and mini plans are still available. Don't delay, contact the Wichita Thunder Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at (316) 264-4625. Stay up-to-date on all the news this off-season by visiting www.wichitathunder.com.
