Trenton Thunder News Release
Trenton, NJ- After only sparing three hits the previous night, the Thunder bats came alive against the Sea Dogs on Friday at Waterfront Park, winning 9-1. With the win, Trenton improves to 9-6 on the year.
Portland took advantage of a wild DJ Mitchell in the top of the first inning. With just one out, Mitchell walked the bases loaded with Sea Dogs first baseman Lars Anderson up at-bat. Anderson would go on to hit a sacrifice fly to center field that would allow Ryan Kalish to tag up from third, and put Portland ahead 1-0.
Trenton would come back to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning off Portland RHP Casey Kelly. With two outs, Reid Gorecki grinded out a double into right-center field. The next batter, Kevin Smith, rolled a single up the middle to put runners at the corners for Daniel Brewer. The Thunder outfielder belted a double down the right field line to bring home Gorecki and tie the game at one. After Luis Nunez walked to load the bases, Austin Krum grounded out to second base to end the threat.
The Thunder went out in front in the bottom of the sixth inning after Portland tapped into their bullpen. After Damon Sublett singled up the middle and stole second base, Reid Gorecki lifted a RBI single into right field to bring home Sublett, and the Thunder took a 2-1 lead.
Reliever Jason Rice came in to pitch the seventh inning for Portland, and Trenton was able to bat around against Rice and get four more runs. Luis Nunez and Austin Krum led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and Rice then walked Austin Romine to load the bases. Brandon Laird was the next batter, and he was walked with the bases loaded to force in the third run of the game for the Thunder. Krum was able to make it 4-1 after crossing home plate on a wild pitch. Reid Gorecki and Kevin Smith brought in two more runs with back-to-back RBI hits, and Trenton had a 6-1 advantage.
The onslaught continued in the eighth inning as Brandon Laird connected on a three-run home run off Rice, his second home run in as many nights.
RHP DJ Mitchell (2-1) pitched six innings, and allowed just one run on two hits.
The Thunder continue their home-stand on Saturday as they play the third of four with the Sea Dogs. RHP Ryan Pope starts for Trenton. Portland counters with RHP Stephen Fife. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
