April 23, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Binghamton, NY- Brian Jeroloman's second-inning RBI single staked the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a 2-0 lead over the Binghamton Mets, but the Fisher Cats' catcher took a called-third-strike on a 3-2 pitch from Derrick Ellison with two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth inning, as the Mets held on for a 3-2 win over the Fisher Cats on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium.

In the ninth, New Hampshire (9-6) loaded the bases by drawing three walks. Pinch-hitter Adam Loewen worked a leadoff base-on-balls against Jose De La Torre before Ellison came on and issued a free pass to Al Quintana and surrendered Jonathan Diaz's Eastern League-leading 14th walk of the season. Ellison bounced back to fan Jeroloman, earning his first save.

Josh Stinson (2-0) earned the victory in an emergency relief role. Stinson replaced starter Eric Niesen, who departed in the top of the second when he was struck in the head by catcher Mike Nickeas' throw to second on Diaz's stolen base. Stinson allowed the inherited run to score when Jeroloman (1-for-3, BB, RBI) knocked in Diaz with a single, giving the Fisher Cats a 2-0 lead. But the right-hander would yield only one other single and one walk in 4.2 innings.

The Fisher Cats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Darin Mastroianni (0-for-2, BB, 2 SB, R) walked, stole second base and stole third before coming home on David Cooper's run-scoring ground out. Mastroianni leads the league with eight stolen bases, though he was caught for the first time when Stinson picked him off first in the fifth inning.

Binghamton (9-7) began its rally back in the bottom of the fourth against losing pitcher Luis Perez when the southpaw walked Luis Hernandez (1-for-3, BB, RBI, R) and Nick Evans (0-for-3, BB) to start the stanza. Lucas Duda (0-for-2, 2 BB) reached on a fielding error, loading the bases, and then Hernandez scored on a double-play grounder, cutting the Fishers' lead to 3-1.

The Mets grabbed the lead by stringing together three consecutive two-out hits in the home half of the fifth. Jonathan Malo (1-for-2, R, BB) legged out an infield single, Kirk Nieuwenhuis (2-for-3, 2B, BB, RBI, R) doubled him in to tie the game and Nieuwenhuis scored on Hernandez's single to right.

Perez (2-1) allowed three runs on five hits in 6.2 innings, notching one strikeout and walking five.

The Fisher Cats square off with the Mets for game three of their four-game weekend set at NYSEG Stadium on Saturday afternoon at 1:05pm with New Hampshire right-hander Kyle Drabek (2-1, 5.17) taking the mound. The Mets have not announced a starter. Radio coverage begins with Fisher Cats Pre-Game at 12:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.

The Fisher Cats return to Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Friday, April 30, to open a three-game series against the Reading Phillies at 6:35pm. An Atlas Fireworks Show follows the game. For tickets and more information, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
