Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - A two-run home run by Erie's Deik Scram in the top of the ninth inning broke a 4-4 tie and lifted the SeaWolves to a, 6-4, win over the Altoona Curve on Friday night at Blair County Ballpark. Jeff Sues (0-1) suffers the loss for Altoona while Brooks Brown (1-0) earns the win for the SeaWolves and Luis Marte earns his second save of the 2010 season.
Altoona began the game against SeaWolves starter Andy Oliver much as they did the last time they faced the left hander. Gorkys Hernandez drew a one-out walk and proceeded to steal second during Jim Negrych's at bat in the first. Negrych then singled through the left side and the speedy Hernandez came around to score and give the Curve a, 1-0, lead.
Starter Justin Wilson went back to the bump in the second with the lead and walked the bases loaded to start the inning. After a strikeout of Jeff Kunkel, Wilson got burned by Cale Iorg, who singled in a pair to give Erie a one-run lead. Shawn Roof followed with a RBI-groundout to put Erie on top, 3-1.
The âWolves tacked on one more in the third and chased the starter Wilson after 2.2 innings. The southpaw permitted four runs while walking six in his third outing of the season. Derek Hankins came on in relief and kept Altoona in the game as he worked 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball.
Trailing, 3-1, in the fifth, Altoona rallied against the starter Oliver with one away when Hector Gimenez, Jose de los Santos and Chase d'Arnaud all singled to load the bases. After Hernandez struck out, Negrych smacked a two-out, bases-clearing double to draw Altoona even with Erie at four.
Erie and Altoona would trade zeros over the next three innings before Scram hit his third home run of the season to win it in the ninth.
Ronald Uviedo also worked two scoreless innings for Altoona on Friday night. The right hander struck out four over his two innings and gave up just one hit. Negrych finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and notched his second four-RBI game of the young season. First baseman Matt Hague also had a pair of hits and has now reached base safely in 11 straight games.
Altoona (11-4) looks to get back into the win column when they once again meet Erie (5-10) on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Blair County Ballpark. RHP Mike Crotta (2-0, 1.86) takes the ball for Altoona in search of his third win while the SeaWolves will counter with LHP Jon Kibler (1-2, 2.00).
Saturday night is a fireworks night in Curve, Pa. and kids 14 & under can also run the bases after Saturday night's game.
