Thunder lose 1-0 in bottom of the 9th

July 23, 2009 - San Angelo, Texas--- Jason Diaz sent a dribbler just in front of home plate scoring Nick Mahin in the bottom of the ninth inning handing the San Angelo Colts (28-13) a 1-0 win atop the Coastal Bend Thunder (21-20).

Colts starter Brian Henschel and Thunder starter Toro Trevino dealt shutout baseball through the first three innings as the game remained scoreless.

In the top of the fourth inning, Coastal bend loaded the bases after two singles and a walk. Henschel wiggled off the hooked inducing a groundout and a strikeout, including some defensive help as Hunter Jobes made a diving play in left center field ending the inning. The game stayed knotted at zero.

The game remained tied into the bottom of the fifth inning. Butch Ballez smoked a ball down the left field line for a stand-up double. Hank Lanto dropped down the sacrifice bunt. Lanto would reach on a throwing error as Ballez moved to third base. Thunder pitcher Toro Trevino worked out of the jam retiring Ronnie Gaines, Jason Diaz, and Bryan Frichter in order.

The game was at zero's in the bottom of the ninth. Hunter Jobes led off the inning with a line drive to right field which struck the top of the wall. Jobes reached second with a double. Nick Mahin accepted an intentional free pass moving the winning run to second base. With nobody out, Thunder pitcher David Parker induced a ground ball by Butch Ballez which placed Jobes and Mahin at second and third. Hank Lanto worked a walk and the bases were full of Colts. With two away, Jason Diaz faced Parker with a 2-2 count. The speedy Diaz tapped a fastball just feet in front of home plate. Nick Mahin raced home as Parker rushed to scoop up the ball. Just as Mahin touched home Parker bobbled the baseball, an attempt to throw out Diaz at first was not in time as the Colts secured the 1-0 victory.

Brian Henschel (5-3) threw his second consecutive complete game, this time nabbing the victory. This would be the right hander's fifth complete game of the year, the best in the United League. In nine innings of work, Henschel scattered eight hits and no earned runs while striking out five. David Parker (2-1) received the loss.

San Angelo and the Coastal Bend Thunder will continue their four game series tomorrow at Foster Field.
