Ballez Delivers, Colts Win Another One Run Contest

San Angelo, Texas--- For the second night in a row, the San Angelo Colts (29-13) won a one run ballgame in dramatic fashion from the Coastal Bend Thunder (21-21). With two outs in the tenth inning, Butch Ballez singled down the third base line pushing home Jason Landreth as the Colts earned their third extra inning win of the season. San Angelo leads the series two games to none.

The Thunder struck in the top of the first. Colts starter Drew Coffey gave up a leadoff single to Alfred Joseph. After a groundout and a single Joseph moved to third. Manny Mejia grounded into a fielders choice, Joseph stepped on home plate giving Coastal Bend a 1-0 lead.

The scoring went stagnant until the bottom of the third. With a runner at first base, Ronnie Gaines sent his fifth homerun of the season over the wall in left center field nailing down a 2-1 lead. With two outs in the inning, Bryan Frichter scorched a ball down the right field line for a double. Jason Landreth, the league leader with 46 RBI's, collected his 47th as he singled to left field scoring Frichter and pushing San Angelo's lead to two runs.

Coastal Bend regained the lead scoring a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth inning. With one out in the fifth, Brett Lester replaced Coffey as Runners stood at first and second base. Lester induced a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Carlos Rodriguez. The Thunder led the contest 4-3.

Thunder second baseman Chris Lewis moved Coastal Bends lead to two runs with a solo homerun to left field.

The Colts made it a one run contest as Bryan Frichter led the inning off with a single. Frichter picked up his twentieth stolen base of the season as he moved to second base.

With two outs in the frame, a single to right off the bat of Nick Mahin brought in Frichter. It became a 5-4

The Colts entered the bottom of the ninth inning trailing by a run. With one out, Hunter Jobes and Butch Ballez singled. Jobes went to third base as Ballez advanced to second on the throw. With two away, Gaines was intentionally walked to load the bases. Thunder closer Benny Cepeda delivered a wild pitch, Jobes raced to home plate reaching safely and tying the game at five. Ballez and Gaines were stranded; the game went to extra innings.

Chace Vacek, in his second inning of work, dealt a three-up three-down tenth inning.

The first pitch in the bottom of tenth inning was driven right back up the middle for a single, it was Frichters fourth hit of the contest. The winning run advanced to as Bryan stole second base, his second of the ballgame. With one out in frame, Landreth and Nick Mahin were given intentional passes. With the bases full, Jobes grounded to first base, Frichter was retired at home plate creating two outs in the inning. It was Butch Ballez turn to be the hero, the Colts shortstop ripped a ball down the third base line out of the reach of Leivi Ventura. It was an easy jog for Landreth who plated the winning run. San Angelo won in walk-off fashion for the second night in a row.

Starter Drew Coffey (2-1) earned a no decision working 4.1 innings, scattering seven hits and four earned runs. Brett Lester pitched 1.2 innings allowing an earned run. Doug Brandt and Jameson Maj pitched scoreless innings, as did Chace Vacek in the ninth and the tenth inning. Vacek (2-0) collected the victory while Benny Cepeda received the loss (3-3).

The Colts offense earned 11 hits and six runs. Bryan Frichter led the way with a double and three singles adding two runs scored. Butch Ballez collected three singles, his lone RBI was the game winner.

San Angelo and the Coastal Bend Thunder will continue their four game series tomorrow at Foster Field. It will be Negro league Tribute Night at the ballpark.First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
