Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Edinburg - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings took over sole possession of the fourth and final playoff spot by beating the Edinburg Roadrunners 7-4 tonight at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Roadrunners (19-23) got on the board against Sendy Vasquez right away. Wilmer Pino led off with a four-pitch walk, moved to third on a Robert Matlock single and scored when Carlos Hereaud grounded into a double play.
Tim Haines (4-4) retired the first eight WhiteWings (20-22) he faced before Casey Allen hit a blooper into no-man's land in shallow right- center field for a single with two outs in the third. Agustin Septimo came up and laced a liner down the right field line for an RBI-triple to tie the game. Denys Lantigua followed with a bloop-single to right field to send Septimo home, making it 2-1 WhiteWings.
The Roadrunners tied it in the fourth. Bryon Smith led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third and to third on a passed ball and Vincent Blue walked. Blue stole second and the throw went into centerfield, allowing Smith to score.
The WhiteWings regained the lead in the sixth. Allen led off the inning by getting hit in the head by a pitch. He left under his own power and was pinch-run for by Justin Holloway. Septimo reached on a fielder's choice and moved to third on a single by Lantigua. Rico Santana grounded into a fielder's choice to score Septimo, making it 3-2.
Carlos Artiles (1-0) made his WhiteWings debut in the bottom of the seventh and picked up a blown save. Osiel Flores drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt because nobody covered third base. That allowed Flores to score on a groundout by Pino. Matlock singled and stole second. One batter later he scored on a single by Smith to make it 4-3.
The WhiteWings answered back in the top of the eighth. Holloway led off with an infield-single and moved to second on a throwing error. Two outs later, Santana hit an RBI-double to knock out Haines. Aaron Guerra came in, and after intentionally walking Brian Nichols to load the bases, got Welinson Baez to hit a grounder to short that was bobbled, allowing Santana to score to give the WhiteWings a 5-4 lead.
With two outs in the ninth, Holloway singled and scored on a triple by Septimo. Angel Reyes followed with an RBI-single to make it 7-4.
Julio Santana pitched a scoreless ninth for his league-leading twelfth save.
The WhiteWings and Roadrunners play game three of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:00. Right-hander Juan Peralta (0-2) is expected to face left-hander Miguel Martinez (3-3).
