Wichita Thunder News Release
Allen, TX - Wichita (18-8-3) battled back to force overtime on Saturday night, but couldn't get past the Allen Americans (18-5-2) losing 3-2 at the Allen Events Center. Scotty Howes scored a power play goal with a 1:30 remaining in the extra session and gave the Americans the extra point. Kevin Young and Chad Painchaud recorded goals for the Thunder. Allen leads the season-series 1-0-1, but the Thunder remain one point ahead of Allen in first place with another meeting between the two teams coming in four days in Wichita.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first period and combined for 26 minutes in penalties. Wichita took the first lead of the game in the second period with a power play goal with two minutes to go. After the Americans were able to clear the zone, Wichita re-gained entry and Young fired a one-timer past the blocker of Steve Silverthorne to give Wichita a 1-0 advantage.
Allen scored the next two goals at the beginning of the third period. Trevor Ludwig converted on the power play at 5:04 with a shot from the blue line to tie the game at one. Six minutes later, Scotty Howes muscled his way to the front of the net and was able to slide it past Kevin Regan to give the Americans their first lead of the game. Wichita answered 54 seconds later as Flath found Chad Painchaud cutting down the slot and put home a one-timer to tie the game at two.
In overtime, Dave Inman was whistled for tripping and the Americans capitalized. Scotty Howes parked himself in front of the Thunder net, caught a pass from Anthony Maiani and re-directed it past Regan for the game-winner.
Wichita was unable to hold onto a lead heading into the third period and is now 13-0-1 when leading after two. Young extended his point-scoring streak to six games, tallying seven points in that span (5g, 2a). Wichita is 1-1 in games decided in overtime, losing for the first time tonight.
Wichita went 1-for-3 with the man advantage while Allen was 2-for-8.
Wichita's next game is the day after Christmas as Allen visits the ICT for the first time. For tickets, call 755-SEAT, visit the INTRUST Bank Arena box office or online at www.selectaseat.com.
