
Thunder fall, 14-13, in 14 inning marathon

(Portland, ME)- Portland's Brandon Moss singled home Tyler Minges in the bottom of the 14th Inning to give the sea Dogs a 14-13 win over Trenton on Sunday afternoon. At 5 hours 30 minutes, it ties for the second longest game in Trenton history.
Out of pitchers, the Thunder (44-38) turned to J.T. Stotts to pitch in the 14th Inning. After getting the first batter out, Stotts (0-1) issued two walks and hit a batter to load the bases. Moss then singled off the left field wall for the game-winner. Portland reliever Jon Searles (5-3) allowed one run in two innings of relief for the win.
The Sea Dogs won the game with their pitchers recording 19 strikeouts on the day, but also issuing 13 walks. The two teams combined for 557 pitches in the game. The other 5:30 game for Trenton was against Binghamton in 1995 at Waterfront Park, a 9-8 loss. This was the longest game in Portland history.
Trenton took a 13-12 lead in the 13th Inning on a Bronson Sardinha RBI single, his 5th hit of the game, but the Sea Dogs tied it in the bottom half on a solo homer by Chris Durbin off Jeff Kennard.
Portland (48-30) jumped out to an 11-2 lead after five innings. They scored seven runs in the 2nd Inning off starter Danny Borrell, including a trio of RBI doubles from Jeremy West, Chris Durbin and Dusty Brown. Borrell allowed seven runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings. Brown added another two-run double in the 4th Inning for the nine-run lead.
Trenton started their comeback against starter Chris Smith in the 6th Inning. They scored six runs, including RBI doubles from Justin Christian, J.T. Stotts and Jason Brown. In the 8th Inning , the Thunder tied the game on a two-run homer by 1B Randy Ruiz and took a 12-11 lead on an RBI single by Christian. But the Sea Dogs tied the game in the 9th Inning on a two-out RBI double from CF Tyler Minges off Justin Pope. The blown save was Pope's 2nd of the season in 19 attempts.
The wrap up of the four-game series is Monday at 6:00 PM. Phil Hughes (5-3, 2.84) starts for the Thunder against Portland's Jose Vaquedano (5-2, 5.47).
