Thunder Bring in Top Prospect from Omaha
May 2, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Bloomington Thunder News Release
BLOOMINGTON, Illinois - The Bloomington Thunder were active ahead of the 2016 USHL Phase I Draft. The team reigned in a top prospect from the Omaha Lancers in forward William Fallstrom (University of Minnesota) on Monday evening. The Thunder picked up the forward in exchange for a 2016 Phase II 4th round pick. Bloomington's newest player will report to the Thunder for the 2016-17 season following the team's current Clark Cup Playoff run.
Fallstrom, 18, is a Swedish born player from Stockholm who entered the USHL for the first time in 2015. He was selected in 2014 as a Phase I pick by the Omaha Lancers in the fifth round, 78th overall. After wrapping up his career with the SuperElit league in his home country, the 5-foot-11 forward produced 13 points (5g, 8a) for the Lancers in 44 games.
To begin the season, Fallstrom was named multiple times to the preliminary NHL Central Scouting lists for the upcoming 2016 Draft in Buffalo, NY. He scored his first USHL goal on December 4 against the Dubuque Fighting Saints and scored two against Lincoln on February 19 for his second multi point game of the season. During those games, Fallstrom tallied five points (4g, 1a) in three games.
Fallstrom was initially named to the 2016 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, but was replaced prior to the game due to injury. The player named as his substitute was none other than Thunder forward Vlad Dzhioshvili (Cornell University) who tallied an assist in the showcase.
A leader on his teams overseas, Fallstrom was named the captain of multiple Swedish international select teams in 2014-15. He also captained two tournament teams where he combined for 17 points in 13 games (8g, 9a).
When his skates hit the ice in 2016-17, Fallstrom becomes the first Swedish born player to join the Thunder in team history. The Thunder have rostered only two other players from outside of North America in Russian born forwards, Vlad and Maksim Dzhioshvili.
