Fighting Saints Draft Eight in Phase I, Complete Deal
May 2, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Head coach/GM Jason Lammers, and director of player personnel Kalle Larsson have announced the selection of eight players during the Phase I of the USHL Draft on Monday evening.
Four forwards and four defensemen were selected by Dubuque in the first phase of the USHL Draft, which encompasses those of the 2000 birth year. Picks included Jacob Semik (1st), Aidan Fulp (2nd), Ben Sanderson (3rd), Logan Pietela (5th), Noah Kim (7th), Ryder Donovan (8th), Nick Azarovitz (9th) and Nick Castro (10th).
Semik, already committed to play at the University of Michigan down the road, was the Fighting Saints' first selection in Phase I. The draft picks ranged from the hockey hotbeds of Michigan and Minnesota, to the emerging Pacific District, where Kim and Castro play.
"A lot of work went into deciding who would have the future opportunity to be a Dubuque Fighting Saint," Lammers said. "We're ecstatic about the group we have now, and moving forward, we look forward to seeing them wear a Fighting Saints sweater in the future."
Also, as part of the agreement in the deal with the Sioux City Musketeers on January 24, the Dubuque Fighting Saints acquired defenseman Michael Boyle on draft day. Boyle tallied one goal and four assists in 45 games for the Musketeers this past season.
"Boyle has lots of raw ability, and is a really strong kid," Larsson said. "We hope he can continue his development with the Fighting Saints starting next season."
Once a seventh round pick of the Musketeers, and a B-ranked skater according to NHL Central Scouting, the native of Phoenix, Ariz. will be under Dubuque control next season before heading to the University of Denver in 2017-18, where former Fighting Saints head coach and Clark Cup champion Jim Montgomery is at the helm.
Phase II of the USHL Draft gets underway on Tuesday, May 3, starting at 8:00 a.m. CDT. Follow along on the Fighting Saints' Twitter account (@fightingsaints), and with the hashtag #USHLDraft for the pick-by-pick breakdown across the league.
