Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Stampede selected forward Gavin Hain of Grand Rapids (MN) High School with the first overall pick of the 2016 USHL Phase I Draft Monday evening. The sophomore posted 29 points (12g, 17a,) in 25 games with the Thunderhawks this past season.
The Phase I Draft includes a total of 10 rounds of players who only have 2000 birth years. The Stampede acquired the first overall pick from Sioux City as part of a trade prior to the start of the 2015-16 season. The Herd already used their other first round selection (9th overall) when they tendered forward Jaxon Nelson from Luverne last month.
"We couldn't be more pleased to officially welcome Gavin to the Stampede organization," said Stampede Director of Scouting Nick Oliver. "He is exactly the type of player and person that we want to build our program around. Gavin brings a winning mentality with his style of play, work ethic, and ability to lead. We look forward to having Gavin in our lineup in the near future," added Oliver.
Hain brings good size to the Stampede organization at 5-foot-11, 181-pounds at just 16-years-old. He exploded in the section playoffs for Grand Rapids, recording 11 points (5g, 6a) in just three games while leading the Thunderhawks to State AA Tournament where they captured a third place title. Prior to the season, he participated in the High School Elite League for Team North where he tallied 13 points (7g, 6a) in 21 games.
Before joining the varsity program at Grand Rapids, Hain put up impressive numbers playing for Grand Rapids Bantam in 2014-15. In 52 games, the skilled forward recorded 67 goals and 52 assists for 89 points on the year. He was named Minnesota Bantam Player of the Year by Youth Hockey Hub.
Hain's talents haven't gone unnoticed as he has already committed to play collegiate hockey at the University North Dakota. He is eligible for the 2018 NHL Draft and is expected to spend the 2016-17 season playing at Grand Rapids High School.
