Thriller Goes To Odessa

Odessa, TX 11/17/09 - Amarillo could not squeeze by their West Texas rival Tuesday night, falling 6-5 in a shootout.

The Jackalopes continued their strong play in the opening period when forward Kenny Bernard rifled a puzzling shot past Gorillas goaltender Mike Brown from the far corner. Amarillo would answer on the power-play with less than two minutes remaining in the period. Forward Jason Beeman, who was involved in a fight earlier, streaked down the far side of the Odessa zone and fed Jake Morissette who sent his one-time shot past Odessa net minder Joel Martin. At the end of one, Amarillo 1 Odessa 1.

The second frame was a back and forth affair with both clubs scoring twice. Amarillo would take the lead when rookie defenseman Jake Obermeyer tapped a rebound past Martin for his second goal on the season. Odessa's Paul Kelly knotted the game at two before Amarillo's Anthony Battaglia sent his laser shot from the far point past Martin for his sixth goal of the season. The Jackalopes would tie the game at three with less than a minute remaining as Collin Circelli pushed the puck past Brown. End of two period of play Amarillo 3 Odessa 3.

The Gorillas showed resolve in the final period of play. Amarillo would find themselves down four-three when defenseman Andrew Smale hammered home a sizzling feed from forward Gordon Bell to tie the game at four midway through the third. The Gorillas would tie the game again in the final period, when Andrew Smale earned his second goal of the game (shorthanded) with less than five minutes to go in the period. End of regulation, Amarillo 5 Odessa 5.

No goals were scored in overtime and the game went to a shootout. Odessa's Dominic Leveille would strike first, while Amarillo did not post a goal in the shootout. Final shootout score 2-0 through four rounds. Final score Odessa 6 Amarillo 5.

Saturday, November 21st is $1 Hot Dog night when Amarillo hosts Arizona at 7pm.
